In a shocking revelation, Swiss newspaper ‘The Tages Anzieger’has mentioned that communities in and around the Rhine valley in Switzerland are consuming dogs, cats and horses’ meat as a part of their meals. This news comes as an appalling revelation for local and international animal welfare activists. They are urging the Swiss government to roll out a law that terms the activities of trading in dog cat and horse meat as illegal.

The consumption of dog meat is being done as a fatty remedy for treating rheumatism and cat and rabbit meat is also being consumed the same way. Reports mention that, just like China, Korea and Vietnam, Switzerland too has a thriving trade for meat as well as cat fur. It has also come to notice that currently Switzerland country is the biggest consumer of horse-meat.

Questions have now been raised on the overall care and welfare of the animals that are being homed as pets, especially in Switzerland. In the past, this country has been lauded as a country with strong animal welfare laws. Unfortunately, the present Swiss laws do not have pet animals under the purview of the animal welfare law. Locals have protested saying that dog or cat meat is similar to that of eating chicken, beef or mutton and should not be the center of such turmoil.

It is estimated that around 3 percent of the Swiss population secretly eats cat and dog meat and the dog breed that is most popularly consumed is a close relative of the Rottweiler. In a petition, 16,000 people have already signed up for the ban on eating of pets and also on the sales of cat fur. PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) is of the opinion that though all animals feel equal amount of pain when they are being harmed or hurt, it is appalling to know that people are killing their own pets for selfish reasons.
