How to care for a 30 day Lab pup

Posted in Puppy Care | By: Pavan Kumar | 10 Feb 2009 9:21 pm

Hi everybody

I would be getting my Lab puppy in the 1st week of March. He would be 30 days old by then.

I was wondering if someone has already written some Guide sorts for the initial care of the puppy - Feeding, vet checks, training etc. If not, can the dog owners kindly throw some light on it. I have never owned a dog before. And I LOVE dogs ... So, it would be great to know many things, if not everything, before I get my pup

Thank you

Consider getting him after 45 days. Its always advisable to separate from the mother only after 45 days or more.

Thanks for your advice bennykennels. But I remember Rana_vr1 in one of his posts was saying 30 days is fine. In his own words - "Hi, one month is the right age to be separated from mother, ..... "

I am not comparing or doubting any person's experience or knowledge here. I am just confused now with the 30-45 days thing.

Are there are any potential problems with the pup's future if it is separated after 30 days? Kindly educate me about it.

Thanks
- Pavan

When an animal receives another animal's defense mechanisms (antibody and/or lymphocytes), rather than developing thier own defense system, we refer to it as 'passive immunity".When a puppy is born, the immune system is not fully developed.Mother Nature has devised a method to provide newborn animals with protection: colostrum, the first milk.
And this is in mother's milk till an age of 7-8 weeks. Hence i would advocate for a period of 45 days. In such case the puppy would be much stronger. And would have learnt basic homebreaking and animal instinct.

wait for the puppy to be atleast 8 weeks old the puppy needs mothers milk for the reasons anil says you need to have puppy checked by vet and get shots before taking your puppy out for walks the puppy should have its first shot around 6 weeks ask the breeder when next shot should be given after your first visit the vet will have you schedule for next shot. You should start training your puppy right away dont expect him or her to get it right away it takes time. you should also get puppy pads for potty training chew toys dog bones treats for training a training book and puppy care they have them for most breeds
