Companions For Life

By Ranjeeta Nath Ghai In today’s stressful world modes and there is an immediate need for individuals to find modes and means to distress themselves and to lead a meaningful life. Each one of us are trying something or the other be it yoga, walking, gardening etc. But personally I feel that the most effective method of distressing oneself, to learn and to teach the values of sharing, caring and devotion to our sibling and our young ones is to keep pets. They can be chosen from a variety of range from fishes to birds to dogs. Though personally I don’t advise keeping birds in cages but nevertheless, birds like love birds /parrots who are born and bred in captivity are not safe out of their cages. Freeing them to fend for themselves amounts to murder in itself. They are not accustomed to roam the blue skies and sooner or later fall prey to the predators. Keeping a pet involves a lot of commitment on behalf of the owner. I would personally advise that those who shy away from commitment and responsibility should absolutely avoid and stay away from pets. But come to think of it, this is an attribute which can be developed by keeping pets. Being an ardent animal lover, I’ve had loads and varieties of pets at a given point of time, namely- bat, hens & roosters, rabbits, parrots, dogs, fishes, tortoise and turtles. Some of them I acquired as injured strays and were left back into the wild or later donated to kindergarten schools in event of my move due to postings. Believe or not it might sound atrocious but tending, caring and looking after each of them gives me so much pleasure, that is quiet impossible for me to put it in words. It’s is a common belief that only dogs know how to respond to the master. It is so, but even small insignificant ones like fishes and turtles respond so well that it is heartening to be in their company. Just the fact that you are standing near their aquarium/teratarium causes a surge of activity amongst these peacefully and lazily swimming creatures. Same is the case with birds be it love birds, mynah, parrots hens or roosters. Since I was 12years old I’ve always had a dog around me and today I’ve three of them- JW(Junior Whisky), Simba & Sheroo. Pet ownership is a huge responsibility. Dogs require a great deal of attention, guidance and care. In return you will receive companionship and unconditional love from them. They are excellent and loving companions. They reduce stress levels and cheer us up when we are feeling blue. They also keep us healthy and active by giving us an excuse to get out for long walks. There are so many things we can learn from dogs. Dogs and pets are friends for life. Dog ownership demands a lot of love, commitment and time. The worst thing for a dog is to be separated from its owner. Never abandon them. Owning a dog of any breed is a big responsibility coupled with oodles of joy, enjoyment and unconditional love. We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made. The greatest pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too. “If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principle difference between a dog and a man...” by mark Twain. Always remember, he is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.
