Dog Rescue

Posted in Reproduction | By: mari | 02 Dec 2010 9:52 am

I am have been an avid animal lover for many years, I was fortunate enough to have grown up with dogs.  I am now married with kids who like me have had dogs all their lives.   After living abroad in the US for many years, I was saddened to learn the plight of our four legged friends.   Dogs are bred in record numbers and then many of them are abused, neglected, abandoned, killed or end up in shelters and euthanized.

I see the same problem happening in India if  the process of  dog reproduction is not managed effectively and humanely.  I personally would never buy from a breeder knowing how many dogs are crying out for homes in shelters.

However, I am happy to see spay and neutering initiatives, addressing the problem of strays on our streets in India.  These dogs are healthier and live longer than dogs that have been imported into India.  In the US, as well as other countries, dog related diseases have increased to epademic proportions, many of these dogs have been imported into India.  I therefore urge anyone interested in taking on a new addition to the family.  To adopt from a shelter, rather than from a breeder.

Situation in US is much more worse than India. They have hundreds of thousands of mills. India has a fraction of that.

That may be true for now, but with India's infatuation with wanting everything foreign and immitating the west in everything, it is only a matter of time before they start facing the same situation.

Everyone immitates a better thing. Upon person to decide what is better. BTW most people feel pity on Pariahs (strays) but do nothing for them..

I don't live in India and you have no idea what I do abroad. There are breeders in the US too and 80% of all dogs that are bred will end up in abused, neglected, starved, beaten, tortured. Now the government is trying to do something about it. Puppies are very cute. But when prospective owners realise the responsibility, cost, work and time that is associated with caring and raising a mentally and physically healthy dog, they are thrown out. Indian breeders are perpetuating a problem that has only started in India. This problem will be more severe for large, giant breeds and high maintenance dogs.( Dogs with health and protective issues)

Lastly, it is better to speak out than to remain silent.

Well Recession in last few years also played a major role in increasing the % of dogs in shelter. Many other factors too.
Thanks for the info.

Mr Doggiedude, please note the following statistics.

In 1997 there were roughly 3500 shelters in the US and only 1,000 shelters contributed to the information below so I will leave you to do the math how many dogs were euthanized had all the shelters participated.

•In 1997, roughly 64 percent of the total number of animals that entered shelters were euthanized -- approximately 2.7 million animals in just these 1,000 shelters.

•It is estimated that approximately 3.7 million animals were euthanized in the nation’s shelters in 2008. This number represents a generally accepted statistic that is widely used by many animal welfare organizations, including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

By my math in 1997 well before the current recession had all the shelters responded, just under 10 million animals were euthanized. Oh by the way this number does not include the number of dogs that are currently being abused or killed by there owners. I am not even going to waste my time to do the math for subsequent years.

Having done alot of work for dog rescues, I will tell you that the majority of the dogs that end up in dog shelters is because of uneducation on the owners part. under-estimated the cost, time and space, traits of the dog. Alot of dogs are handed in because of the epademic of diseases and breeding defects . A direct correlation to food and drugs consumed by pets.

Please stop being defensive and be part of the solution, as opposed to the problem. If you require any further information please let me know.

I am concerned of Pariah Canines in India as cannot do anything for other places. I am already a part of the solution and not just debates/blogging. Also Please lets not take this topic personally.
