My experiments and experiences with varieties of dog food...

Troubled times at Ameya Kennels

We at Ameya Kennels had our fill of trouble with all sort of imported and Indian dry dog foods for 6 long years.Premature aging, panting leathargic dogs with perpetual skin problems, irregular seasons, troubled pregnancies, smaller litters with smaller puppies, dreadful infant mortality.Life expectancy of dogs going lower without any obvious reasons.

Winds of CHANGE

Then we decided to feed our own fresh food. Encouraged by improvements, started our quest for finding perfect food.Every new ingredient was painstakingly researched for andsourced for.Farms for rabbits, queil, turky were started afresh. Herbs, fruits and veggies are home grown organically.Every effort to mimic mother nature was made. The great variety of food a wild dog eats alongwith the vegetables/fruits/grains in  the guts of pray, function of the detoxifying clay ingested was revisited, grains were sprouted,pre-digested with natural enzymes, removed undigestable shells/husk/fibre.

The uphill CLIMB and the DAWN.......

2 years of unlearning what myths and half-truths GIANTS had pushed  down our throat  maize, soya, feathermeal into our dogs, many many meetings with our friend vets/nutritionistsdisscussions with breeders friends of many countries, visits to their kennels, lots of lab.tests on ingredients and our 120 plus doggies' votes &approvals later what followed is nothing short of miracle.

AND the MIRACLE.......

Overall health improvement, great coat enthusiastic hyperactive dogs, regular and large litters, happy kennel full of healthy puppies suckling on their mothers plenty
of milk.Lesser and hard stools ,little smell and easy to clean.Far fewer cases of vomit or diarrhoea.Antibiotics ,tonics ,vet charges down to 10 percent.12 year old dane (our first dog) is  enjoying agility ring..

Having got the recipe right,we wanted to share the same with the owners of my puppies so that they again need not learn the hard way.But asking a new puppy owner to prepare our recipe was impractical.Only solution was to offer them the prepared food.Sharing the benefits of the discovery with fellow breeders was also our obligation  due to their contribution in the development, and
also their ability to guide others. Hence the decision to  put the K9 RELISH on the market.

Problem was,K9 RELISH was to be fresh food, and our conviction that  preservatives in general and artificial preservatives in perticular were the last thing we would add Storing, transporting the food without preservatives with long shelf life and still keeping it fresh for your "LITTLE LIONS" was tough nut to crack.Hassles of refrigeration
with given unpredictability of electricity and facillities at customers forced us todrop frozen food idea.

Then came the retort pouch concept of this centuri.Essentially developed for armed forces,it is fast emerging technology for ready to eat foods for humans in the world and now in India.

  THE RETORT CONCEPT     ;      ;      ;

The raw food material is packed and sealed in a special  import 4-layer aluminium and high temp.polymer pouch and sealed. The pouch is then quickly cooked to very high temp. and pressure in a state of the art retort panel utilising  complex process using high pressure steam,Nitrogen, air and water  for  fixed duration  and then quickly cooled .The tricky procedure prevents the pouch from bursting open. This sterilises the pouch contents .The food inside is kept free fromspoiling as long as it is intact. As the process also ensures that nothing evaporates or escapes
from pouch while cooking or subsequently,it smells and tastes better than even fresh open cooked food. And above all  NO PRESERVATIVES......

Thus our quest for your and our loved doggies has made us install these retort panels, the special filling/sealing machines ,import those special pouches,to bring you K9 RELISH at fair price, without preservatives or refrigeration. We are very proud to have contributed in the betterment of lives of our Indian dogs.www.k9relish.com

i guess it also implies that different breed have different nutrition requirements. how is that achieved in this process?

well, 17 breeds, from yorkshire to irish wolfhound from many parts of world, all ages from weaning(read 35days)to 13 years old, healthy active dogs to hypothyroid, dogs prescribed to hepatic diet, dog with diabetes, artetitis all r fed same food.My first dog
Robin is a dane 13+years with mild arteritis in control, otherwise in full health. Most dry foods, except pallet size nothing is much changed. How many meals in ur lifetime
u calculated calories,protein,fat % ,balanced the same before eating?Do u know of
any animal doing it in nature?Only on one count,I suspect, the dry food companies
hv something different for puppies than breeding females. They advise u not to feed
puppy food to breeding bitches though ptotein and other so called requirments r same?why do pups hv explosive growth brought up on puppy food?extension of the
same question is why they hv more health problems(read less immunity) and faster aging?Hope u understand what I am hinting at?

what i mean is that its known that for example a breed having long hair needs 10 times more Omegas than a short coat breed. If these 2 breed comes say in gaint group, how is the Relish Food compsed? Or is it based on BARF or PMR model only?

By: Anil @ DoggiesDude | 16 Feb 2010

PRADEEP KOUSHIK

How many afghan hounds or tazi in native afghanistan get sea food for omega 3?how do they grow coat?I question the model itself. It is likely that some micro-nutrients in the variety of meat that goes in Relish and/or remains preserved because of unique way of preparation of food make the things work.Do u ever eat
ur meals based on some model? All my dogs were always free fed like I would eat my
meals.

Avisek Dasgupta

Nice blog.

I wouldnt want to comment about the food but one quick question.

I see that your kennel has almost every kind of breed that one could think of. The only other kennel that I know of who has so many breeds is Poddarkennel.

Could you please tell me how different is your kennel from Poddar Kennel?

Is K9 Relish available in Mumbai. Is raw feeding a good idea, as it will give the dogs what they would have got in the wild. Many people have diffrt opinion on this, can you share your views on this.
