My First Time with Pups

Posted in Puppy Care | By: El Bandito | 12 Nov 2010 5:17 pm

I have adopted a 25 days old stray pup which has been sort of rejected by her mother. He has been brought home from Himchal and to my knowledge resembles "Bhutia" breed, but for all accounts he is a mixed breed.

Personally I don't have any past experience with dogs, so I hope you all will be bear with me for my ignorance. I think this little fella deserves a chance and I'll be largely dependent on advices from various quarters (DOGSPOT being one of them) to raise my pup.

Day 0: To start with he's been with me for past 3 days, soon after adopting him (it was an evening when I brought him in) I found out that he had heavy tick and flea infestation (I could see them crawling on his face). For the fear of being infected myself I set up his bed (duly protected from elements of nature) in veranda. It was understandably a terrible night, given that he had been moved to new place, away from his siblings and also because he was being irritated by those vermin.

Day 1: Next day was pretty sunny so I used this opportunity to bathe him with "Mediker". After drying him with towel, when his hairs were combed I think if not less at least 100+ bugs were removed. In the evening I took him to the vet who told me that he had a fever and gave him 2 injections, prescribed MERALAC 2 Spoons in 50 ml Milk 5 times a day. He also gave me NOTIX powder for fleas & ticks, which seems to have almost eliminated the problem. As for the vaccination he told me that he would give all 3 shots namely (7in1, & de-worming) on the day he’s 1 month old. Later in the evening he seemed to be much better, though mostly lethargic he had a hint of alertness in his disposition. The night did not pass well for us as he kept whining intermittently and would stop if any of the family members went to him.

Day 2: It continued till 6 A.M in the morning after which he went to sleep and continued to sleep almost all through the day waking up only for food and to relieve him. He also seemed very fragile, passed very loose stools and rubbed his back against the floor after eliminating. This worried me a lot and I took him to the same vet again he told me that my pup still has some fever and administered him 2 injections again. Along with that he also gave him a medicine which I believe had something to do with the worms. Also he prescribed DIGITYON to improve his digestion. On returning back home my pup looked a lot better and even ran around, which he doesn't do normally and I do not force him to as I wanted him to recuperate fully. It was another eventful night as I thought that maybe he feels lonely and isolated when he sees no one around at night, so I decided to bring his bed in my room. As it turned out that my decision was very wrong as he seemed to be very restless and eventually defecated in the room. I had to move him back to his old location as from there he had an access to his designated "toilet". I think he didn't like the idea of being moved out as he started whining again. I felt maybe he was hungry, since he had his meal almost 4 hours ago, so fed him some MERALAC after which he slept peacefully for most of the night.

Day 3: He again passed his day sleeping all the time looking particularly frail and I was really worried about him. He seemed to be particularly uncomfortable with his hind, which I think was because of the worms. In the evening I wanted to take him to the vet for the check up, but wanted to check his temp myself before taking that step. I found that his temperature was about 100.8 F so decided to observe him for a while. After an hour or so he woke up all fresh and rejuvenated and started playing as if nothing has happened. However he was again whining through the night and would stop if he saw someone around.

Ritesh

hey bro, you are doing quite good to take proper care of your pooch, however you never mentioned what are you feeding the pup,

I hope everything will be fine.
Food: As your pup is just 25 days feed him proper designated dog milk (powder form) for weaning pups at least till he his 45 days old, DO NOT feed him milk for human consumption. do not feed him anything which is wheat based.
