The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon, together with the Animal Welfare Board of India, will commence sterilizing and vaccinating stray dogs in Gurgaon and the rest of Haryana. This is part of the AWBI’s national rabies control program. The board has been granted Rs 30 crore by the ministry of public health to conduct this operation across Haryana.

According to an AWBI official, sterilization will begin soon in all rural and urban areas of Haryana and the whole program has been called Haryana's Rabies and Street Dog Population Control Programme. MCG’s role will be to provide infrastructure and lodging facilities for the teams conducting the sterilization and vaccination. It will also provide vehicles for mass vaccination and bringing the dogs in for surgery and then releasing them.

The aim is to make Haryana the first state to become free from rabies. Sterilization drives have been conducted in Gurgaon before but never at this scale.
