Effective management of amenities in any city is solely based on the effectiveness of the local authorities, namely the City Corporations or the Municipal Corporations. With continuous steps being taken by these corporations in close collaboration with the local residents and locality / ward heads, effectively managed cities are the ones where the infrastructure is well taken care of and the sanitation facility is clog free.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s own constituency - Varanasi has been battling with the increased cost of anti - rabies medication due to the lack of proper infrastructure for sterilisation of stray dogs and effective anti - rabies programme. Varanasi plans to follow the footsteps of cities such as Kolkata ( Canine Control Room, Call center - 033-222-69909), Chandigarh (Toll Free Number - 155304), Thiruvananthapuram, Ahmedabad ( Call center - 079 - 253 91811), Nashik and Jaipur ( Call center - 0141 - 5110111; Toll Free:1800180 - 6681) and set up a well defined Animal Birth Control and Sterilization cum Immunization Programme.
With the number of stray dogs increasing in the city, Varanasi Municipal Corporation proposes to set up Animal Sterilization Units with operating rooms in the five zones that the city operates in. The aim of the programme is to sterilise maximum number of stray dogs and reduce the costs that government hospitals incur on anti - rabies medication that residents take as a precaution. Under the guidance of veterinary surgeon Md. Ansari and a close collaboration with Association for Prevention and Control of Rabies in India, Varanasi hopes to have a strong Animal Birth Control programme and a reduced cost of anti - rabies immunization.
