Tillie guarded her "best friend" Phoebe for days before rescuers found the lost dogs!
An Irish Setter and Spaniel mix named Tillie, and a Basset Hound named Phoebe, took off from their home in Washington, on 7th Spetember. Owner B.J. Duft told media that he was throwing a party that day, and amidst all the activity, someone accidently left the door open.
Despite searching earnestly, Duft couldn't find his beloved pets even after a full week. On his request, animal rescue organization Vashon Island Pet Protectors had posted about Tillie and Phoebe on their Facebook page. One day they received a call from someone mentioning that for the past few days, one 'reddish' dog had been coming upto them on their property, and then trying to guide them back into a ravine.
The VIPP volunteers headed into that ravine, and were surprised to find Tillie sitting next to an old concrete cistern, all worried. Volunteer Amy Carey told USA Today that inside the concrete cistern sat Phoebe, alive and in a good condition, but unable to get out.
The VIPP team was successfully able to rescue both the dogs and reunite them with daddy Duft, who was super "thrilled" to see them.
"It was very clear what Tillie had tried doing." Carey told the media. "She had not left her friend's side except just for going up to the man's house to try and get help for Phoebe!"
Duft has already ordered a dog collar with GPS to help prevent something like this from happening again. He told the media that he was “absolutely not surprised” that Tillie stood by her friend in the woods for a whole week.
“Tillie is a very loving, caring, and nurturing dog and the two of them are the best of friends,” said Duft.
