A Proper Diet for Cardigan Welsh Corgi

While the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is an absolutely gorgeous, funny and quite amazing breed that enjoys giving a lot of love and affection, they also require a lot of care and attention. This includes a proper diet for your pet, and this should be one of the primary steps towards ensuring their health and longevity.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi’s are generally classified as an extremely active and lively breed. They require lots of exercise as well as playtime to stay both physically and mentally alert, fit and healthy. This reflects and is clearly related to your dog’s diet. Due to their high activity they will benefit from high protein nutrition which consists of top grade, quality meat that is low in fat. These breeds are prone to being excessively overweight so it is extremely important to avoid fatty aliment.

Dog diet should be predominantly based on a large proportion of lean meat, but should also include a variety of vegetables, fruits and cereals (although corn and wheat should be eliminated) this provides a substantial but complete source of nutrients and minerals they need. It is advised that other aliments that are not healthy or do not provide adequate nutrition like chocolate and pastries. Treats are ok but should be limited to every once in a while or your Corgi may become dependant on them or possible display bad behavior. Also try to avoid any foods with preservatives. Home cooked meals for your Corgi can even save you money instead of buying commercial foods.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi’s diets include top quality meat that is derived from fish, beef, rye and oats in order to obtain the protein content they need for being such active dogs. Plenty of fresh water should also be provided each day to counteract what is lost during times of play.

Some say their food should contain nutrient sources close to those found in the native environment of the particular breed’s ancestors. But has the required balance of protein, fatty acids, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. Those who feed their pets correctly can save themselves a lot of money, as many dogs have been taken to the vet suffering for poor nutrition related issues, so the bills can generally add up over time unnecessarily if a specific diet is followed. Some problems that may appear due to inappropriate food proportions and nutrition can range from dry/itchy/flaky skin, hot spots, yeast infections, liver – kidney and thyroid problems.

It is highly recommended that Cardigan Welsh Corgi owners take the time to learn about the correct nutritional needs of their pet. There are many foods that appropriate for your Corgi available. So be sure to look out for the correct diet as this will not only save you the cost of vet bills but also give your pet a healthy and happy lifestyle.
