Please suggest me better quality dog food?

Gentlemen, I have a labrador puppy about 4 months. His name is Mojo. I bought him from a breeded. When I bought him, he was weak. For the first month, I was feeding him an egg daily and milk with rotis. Due to heat, I tried Pedigree for a while and switched him to Royal Canin. I am writing on this forum seeking answers to two questions. 1. Mojo has developed rashes around his pubic area. Initially he had ticks to which I used shampoos and later a liquid to keep them off. I sought medical help and the doctor advised Ciprofloxican tablets which I feed him regularly but the problem does not seem to go away. Is this because of the change in dog food? 2. After I have switched to Royal Canin, Mojo seems to be having digestion problems. His stools are very dry and very small in quantity. Also, he has to make more efforts in defecating when compared to Pedigree. Is this due to Royal Canin or should I try some other food. Mojo consumes almost 3 litres of liquid in the form of milk and water every day. I am convinced with the quality of Royal Canin but do not seem to understand these issues just after having switched to a better quality dog food. Please enlighten me with your experience and expertise to help me and my dog. Awaiting your replies.

how you made the switch for the food? did you change it gradually or you changed all of a sudden in one day.
The rashes in public area maybe due to some skin allergies try some diff vet for this problem as your vet cant seem to fix it with that tablet.which royal canin food you feeding? is it junior or maxi? Also check the place where you keep your dog.Apply some antifungal creams and it may help to fix the rashes.

Dear Ravi,

Thanks for the reply Ravi.

When I give him the tablets, the rashes seem to dry off but as soon as I stop them, they re-occurr. I should consider changing the vet.

I switched the food gradually in a week's time. I am keeping the food in a dry place.

I am feeding him Maxi Junior. One of the product of Royal Canin is for Labradors, I don't no the exact name. Is that recommended?

1) Maxi Junior is good. If you want more high quality food you can try "timberwolf" or "taste of the wild"
2) did you give deworm medicine every 15 days? till 6 months, if not give drontal plus according to puppy weight
3) Even after this rashes prevails try to find a good vet who knows what to be done.
As of i know rashes occurs due to food allergy or skin infection. It may also occur according to the place where you keep the puppy. Try giving him a bath with antitick shampoo for every 15 days then we will see how the rashes stands.Maybe the rash would have happened due to tick then puppy would have itched that area so much or still would be itching that so try to use some antifungal creams and try to cover that area with a cloth or bandage for 1-2 hrs.

Hi Malav.. Small quantity and very solid stool is a healthy sign for your dog. If you feel your dog is in pain when he poos.. then try giving him a banana daily. The rashes around his pubic area may be due to a fungal / bacterial infection. Does he lie down on wet areas? That could have caused the infection. All these occur due to poor immune system. These days pedigree dogs have poor immune system unlike mongrels. Do not go back to pedigree. Pedigree is a crap food.

Thanks Ravi and Rajesh for the helpful insights. I think I will first try the anti-fungals and then deliberate whether I need to change the dog food or not.

Malav , try giving him Home made food.I have a 41/2 mth old lab and I give him rotis with fortified atta and milk , Venkys pet food (best in show) and whatever I cook at home (we are vegetarians)
The roughage in our food will make him have regular stools. Also avoid pedigree as the base is corn and it causes constipation.I have had dogs all my life and it is only now that these pet foods have stormed the market...much like beauty products swarming after India won the miss world !!

Try Himalay herbals tick powder which will take care of the rashes
All the best

Thanks Anita for your concern and the solutions.

I have shifted him to Eggs and Chicken which he is relishing. Also, he is responding very well to eggs and chicken and his growth is eye catching. Only thing is that I have an added effort to cook and exercise him :-(

I have tried Venky's Best in Show and it is good compared to its counterparts. I am planning to put him again on Venkys but as an option.

Presently, I am try the Notix and a herbal shampoo which seems to be effective. But I will definitely keep in mind the Himalaya brand which was highly recommended even by my retailer.
