Robin, GSD has very high IQ level. They learn things very quickly and you don't necessarily have to be an expert for training these dogs. You just need to show the direction and they follow the way on their own. You have a puppy so you can train your dog to :
A) come, sit and down.
B) Healing and loose lease walking.
C) Fetching, etc.
You can watch youtube vidoes which will give you an idea how to start the training. The main thing is that you teach your dog right from the beginning. If your puppy is well socialized - exposed to all external environment including animals, nature, objects and humans and you don't chain or restrict your dog by chain, you will have a very obedient companion when he's fully grown.
