My 48 days old Lab puppy passed stool for 7 times today, help?

Hi, My 48 days old Lab puppy passed stool for 7 times today so far (it's 10:30 PM right now), and the tools were a little loose. In last 4 stools, at the end of stools a couple of drops of mucus came out, and I could see a little bit blood in the mucus. The stools were not completely liquid, but were softer than normal. I am not sure why the bloody mucus is coming out, but I am a bit worried. The puppy seems very normal otherwise. She is very alert and playful when she is up for it. She eats very well, and drinks water as normal. I had dewormed the pup with half tablet of Drontal Plus at 5 AM on 8 November, and then a vet gave 7-in-1 vaccine at 1 PM on 9 November. About the food, I have been feeding Royal Canin Maxi Starter to the pup, but from 10 November, I am mixing a little bit of Royal Canin Labrador Junior 33 with the Maxi Starter. The pup is born on 26 September, so she turned 48 days today. I called a vet to find out what could be the issue, and he said it could be a kid of dysentery, and gave names of an antibiotic syrup. I was a bit sceptical about giving medicines to dogs without justified reasons, so thought to check with you before I give any medicines. Please let me know what I should do. I am looking forward to hearing back from you soon. Thank you very much in advance.

puppy diarrhoea is very common, it might be due to change of food. my puppy caught this sort of bloody diarrhoea when he was 60 days old. it happened as i fed him a petfood which contained powdered milk, later i came to know he is allergic to milk. since the puppy has already passed stools for so many times its very important to see whether she is dehydrated. i would suggest you to stop his food now and feed her very little amount of water if she is not vomiting, this is very important, if she vomits, then withold water and take her to the vet immediately. take a large glass of water, put 1 teaspoon of sugar, a pinch of salt and give it to ur dog in very little amount every half an hour. this will keep her rehydrated. take her to the vet in the morning. the vet will give her saline drip and some antibiotics. but if she continues to pass blood in her stools then as an emergency measure, u may give her 1 tab of metrogyll 200.this will stop the stool. but do take her to the vet. bloody diarrhoea may kill your dog if not treated.

Dear Mr Chakrabarty,

Thanks a lot for your inputs.

The puppy is not dehydrated at all. She doesn't vomit, and eats pretty well. Everything is totally normal except the stools.

Even the feces are not liquidy. They are just bit loose and very small amout of mucus follows the feces.

I spoke to a few people whom I think know a bit about dogs, and they suspect that it could be the effect of half talbet of Drontal Plus which I gave to my pup on 8 November for deworming. The worms may be coming out now. A few other websites also say the same thing that worms might be the reason for bloody mucus in stools.

I am not sure what exactly is happening to my pup, but I would like to think that it's just worms and nothing more than that. In that case, bloody mucus should stop within a day or two.

I have stopped giving Royal Canine and am giving curd to the pup. Hopeing that will bring the stools back to normal.

If things don't change much within next day or two, I would start giving medicines and will consult a vet for this matter.

Thanks again.

Dear Mr Chakrabarty,

Thanks a lot for your concern.

The puppy is doing much better than yesterday. According to advices from a couple of friends, I had stopped giving her Royal Canine and fed only curd to her last night and today early morning. She passed stool about an house ago, and the stool quality was nearly normal. There was no mucus this time, but on careful observation, I could see very little spot of blood on feces.

I am gonna feed curd and rice for rest of the day today as it seems to work against whatever had caused mucus and loose stools. If the things stay normal for the whole day today, I will start giving normal food to her from tomorrow morning.

There is no sign of dehydration. She drinks normal quantity of water and urinates normally. She even had an active play session in the morning.

Again, I am thankful to you for your concern.

Mishqa (the pup) passed stools for the first time today just about half hour ago, and it was almost close to normal. There was no mucus or sign of blood in the stools. So that is a very good news!

She was on yogurt and rice for past 36 hours. I am putting her back to Royal Canin Maxi Stater now. Let's see how she responds. I hope she will be fine.

Thaks everyone for your help.
