I need to help myself and my 6 yr old daughter get over the fear of dogs, help?

I need to help myself and my 6 yr old daughter get over the fear of dogs. After that, we would love to bring a puppy home. i have read that the best way is controlled and gradual introduction to calm dogs. We have been advised to start by being around some puppies between four and six weeks (the age before pups get jumpy and yappy.) and then see if the child is willing to hold the puppy. If that goes well, the child may be ready to be near and even interact with an adult dog of a small, calm breed like a cocker spaniel or pug. Would love to hear from dog lovers or breeders who can help us interact with their pups for some time and then we can hopefully bring a pup home in some time.

I dont think its a good idea to introduce your kid to puppies first as they will want to chew on things etc. which might give a wrong impression to a child. I think one should introduce a child to a calm adult dog. May be spaniel or a lab as I feel they are the gentlest specially a well behaved adult dog.

I have spaniels and you are more than welcome to let ur kid interact with my dogs, but I am in Mussoorie.

Try this, whenever you go outside with your daugther take some 2 packets of Parlae G (5 Rs/-) biscuits, tell your daughter to feed stray dogs with the biscuit that you have, doing this activity not only make you and your daugher overcome fear from dogs but also helps abondoned poor stray dogs to feel love. Beleive me stray dogs are more loyal and it will never bite/harm you if you earn respect and love from them.

You also need to remember that raising the dog need huge responsibility and it is like raising the kid, but here your dog will remains kid in his lifetime mentally. So you need to be more focussed on his activities and training methods.

thank you all for your inputs. if we can interact with any calmer adult dogs or really small pups in Bangalore that will be very helpful.
