Here is my recomendations for your needs..

1. English Cocker Spaniel (Preferably Pet Quality, very very very good with family) starts from 6K, you will get it 5K also...
2. Indian Spitz starts from Rs 1500/-
3. Daschund starts from 4K (hard to train and once trained very good with family)
4. Lhasa Apso starts from 5K (very difficult to potty training, also bond with family only aloof with strangers)

Decide carefully, i suggest you for english cocker as its the best with family...

what is your kid's age??? if they are below 10 then you better wait for few more years... and what about the other family members??? do they like dogs and ready for the commitments towards the dog. I must tell you that raising a dog is not an easy task... all family members should participate.

Thanks to all for posting the comments -
@Shreyank - I am not too keen for Pug, weather it fits my budget or not.
What my thoughts are is need a small breed as suggested, Dash or Cocker goes with my lifestyle.
@Gopal - Kids are 8 and 6, surely looking for small breed, I think the 2 options which are listed should not harm kids or knock them over. Family is participative in the on boarding process.
Thanks Guys..

Its not about a breed could knock down kids or can hurt them or not... don't forget that any dog is an animal and they have their own rules and code of conduct... i have seen dog who are very loving to their family but are aggressive and dominant towards another dog or person... a small dog like Spitz or Chihuahua could challenge a pit bull or rottweiler in the term of showing dominance... the size doesn't matters in the dog's world

you can find many people complaining about their small dogs as a biter or barker

and with the small kids under 10 a small mistake could initiate a bite because kids don't know well how to play and the dog don't know the biting or nipping is not a part of game with humans... in dog world the life starts with the teeth... the mother carries their children but holding them in teeth...

so always remember if you have kids under 10 your responsibility are double...

have a happy time!!!

smaller dogs are those who are more agressive at times....so its very difficult to suggest u can go with a lab if u can get one.hardly is any other dog more gentle than the lab

@Stalin Lab is very naughty and he needs a lot of exercise when he is in childhood, also most wont recommend lab for apartment dwellers. I wont mean that lab wont suit for apartment but the owner would be more enough to provide sufficient play/exercise to him.

@shreyank I didnt found that add. Could you please send me the url for this add?
