Record Breaking Turnout At India's First Pet Convention Held In Delhi
11 Nov 2014

On Saturday, 1st November 2014, Delhi witnessed one of the most populous conventions held at
Dilli Haat, quite rightly in the heart of Delhi. This convention was not just another industrial conclave but a mass gathering of animal lovers. Pet Fed 2014 was a glorious summit of minds that possess compassion for all creatures and animals.
Humans are a troubled species and progress has only made the being more complex. But in the constant race of conformity and 'success', mankind so often forgets that they are supposed to coexist. We do not just live for ourselves but also for the welfare of all other beings and respecting their presence.
Pet Fed was the perfect convention for all animal lovers to express their fascination for the domestic animals that we so dearly love to share our space and time with.
Being the first of its kind for pet owners, many seasoned veterans of the pet industry were in two minds over the turnout of the event. But to the amazement of a few and the correct expectation of others, Pet Fed - Delhi surpassed all records by receiving a footfall of over 9500 individuals between 11AM- 9PM on a single day.
All fun and games plus a little knowledge
With omnipresent gentry of a variety of demographics and a perfect amalgamation of our national diversity, Dilli Haat was the perfect venue for such an event. Priding upon the presence of various handicrafts and foods from various major cities, Dilli Haat attracts a large number of regular visitors from all walks of life. But it was a lucky day for the regulars passing by, to have met hundreds of dogs while looking to take a break from the stressors of urban life.
The event itinerary included headline events like
‘Paws With Poise’ - a fashion show for the dogs where owners can dress up their pooches and show off to a swarm of animal fanatics. An auditorium had never seen such an eager turnout as the one that was hosting Puppy Therapy, where around 38 pups and 10 volunteers from SPCA Noida took the spotlight. Visitors could visit the room and melt right there with tons of puppies showcasing their unconditional love towards the visitors. The intent was to raise awareness about adoption, fostering and take a stand against animal abuse.
Across the room from Puppy Therapy, we had a “
Pupcake” making competition, which I initially mistook for dog-friendly cupcakes. Being one of the judges, I got to try cutely decorated and yummy variants from each of the contestant, about 10-12 delicious cupcakes in total. And there it was, my misconception correcting itself that the talented dessert chefs were not there to cater to the animals but to the 9500+ people during the day.
In addition to the frolic that got us a fun-filled Saturday, there were some serious professional stalls and discussions. AlphaPets and MaxVets were two prominent medics on call at the event in case of any spontaneous requirement. Dog owners could also get a basic vet check for their pet from one of these stalls and get their common pet medical queries answered.
In the midst of these fun-filled adventures of dogs and their fan base, certain speakers on stage were briefing visitors on topics like ‘
ethical breeding’ and ‘ animal rights’. In fact, even I got the opportunity to deliver a jittery 10-minute talk on dog behaviour and basic pet keeping.
Big Names with Big Pets
While many were astounded by the plethora of activities that Pet Fed had to offer to them, there were a select few whose mere presence gave the budding animal professionals a spring in their step. Out of all the renowned commercial and individual brands present there, it was
Union Cabinet Minister Smt Maneka Gandhi whose presence gave credibility to the entire event. Although her appearance was limited to 30 minutes due to prior commitments, her sister and renowned animal rights activist Ambika Shukla stayed to attend almost the entire event. Ms. Shukla, who is a senior animal rights activist aligned with the Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre, also judged a number of contests like the ‘Paws with Poise’ fashion show and the PetaCom Brand Ambassador Contest amongst others.
Akshay Gupta, founder and CEO of
Mydea Ventures gave life to something that had been just an imagination for the past few months for all the people involved. This 22-year old has launched his enterprise with such an extravagant debut, that the bar has now been set very high; just the way this generation of entrepreneurs like it!
In addition to
Dogspot.in being the Digital Media Partner of this campaign, many well-known brands like Pets Empire, and Heads Up For Tails also sponsored this convention. There were more than 24 different occupants showcasing the evolution of the Indian pet care industry as we know it. Bakery brands like PetaCom and Bark On Gourmet Barkery were present to cater to the protagonists of the concept, our dogs and cats!
When Animal Love Shines
Evident from the hype, we all must agree that Pet Fed was ultimately a success beyond measure. The core team of Mydea Ventures meticulously orchestrated the management and it apparently took them 6 months of planning and marketing for a near flawless operational event. With a volunteer base of over 90 students along with slight assistance from the sponsors, the Mydea team had all corners covered from crisis management to keeping the dogs entertained and free from stress. Like vultures waiting for opportunity, there were however a few unscrupulous breeders who were selling Toy Poodles and spamming the venue with flyers and commercial deception. But the organizers politely and effectively evicted such people before the activists escalated the issue.
To add to such a massive reception of people, accolades of first pet convention have been so rightly published across many media outlets including popular newspapers like Dainik Jagran, The Hindu, Indian Express and even a small footage on the popular TV channel- NDTV Good Times.
