Taking your dog by Indian Railways

Posted in Dogs Travel | By: Jamini Padhi | 15 Sep 2011 1:20 pm

Indian Railways has made very cruel rules for the pets. Even worse are the co-passengers. Those days are gone when people travelling in upper class were gentlemen or ladies. They had respect for pets esp. GSD.

The people who travel upper class (IA) are grumpy, haughty and behave as if they own the Indian Railways or are some kind of royalty. Worst the TTC and attendant are game at pleasing passengers and earn few hundred buck in tips.

It is really miserable to plan a travel of 2000 km by train; the rules itself are fearsome. The RPF is a big joke on the name of Force. Once I had got down at Bilaspur to lodge a complaint with Station Master who directed me to RPF Inspector. The RPF Inspector was busy with arranging ticket for some people or his relatives and shouted at two of his constables to take care. These two constables were the real culprits - the train had already started moving - they told me not to make too much noise and that too when people were getting into any available place at Bilaspur station to travel to Raipur. My point was that it was well past 10 pm and that they were drunk. I had no problem but their behaviour was rowdy. I was then travelling with my mother and pet. How can drunk people get into FC or 1A? We have to say "it happens only in India"... and keep quite.

ya thats true this can very well happen in India. and it is not going to stop because we , the people have accepted it.

What has made us accept it? People have to reach their destination and are time bound, isn't it? Then what is the mistake of the people? How can a few Class-4 staff of Railways hold passengers to ransom? These people will need a lesson or two.

Jamini if you are so particular about your case , than their is forum in raiway were you can file complaint to higher officials... but as usual.. they may also try to cover it.

Ya! That's true. We can give a complaint but who will deal this? Their higher officials? No. Waste of time. It is the mistake from higher people. But one thing they forget that they are elected to serve people and especially safeguard public. But who will protect us if govt people works against us..

I completely accept your post. The Indian railways are crap these days. They have gone to dogs. Like you said , they have very cruel rules for pets. I was getting on a train from juhu to chowpatti and a constable just appears from nowhere and tells me to leave jojo (my dog) on the ground and tells me to sit in the third class if I have to take jojo with me. I was so miserable that day. I had to call one of the other loacl authorities and let me take jojo with me in upper class. This is very stupid as long as I am concerned.

@Samita
As far as I know there is no train station at Juhu or Chowpatty for that matter. And the train problem you are talking about are local trains while the rest are talking about long distance trains. And local trains in mumbai do not have third class. they have 1st class, second class and reserve compartments for ladies (divided into first and second class) and handicapped compartment.

Also there are very few people who travel with dogs and hence, it is possible that the RPF constables do not know about the rules regarding dog travel or the formalities required. I have personally come across station masters who have no idea about dog travel being allowed in trains.
