Temperament and Characteristics of Bulldogs

Posted in Obedience Training | By: Camille Goldin | 29 Mar 2011 4:20 pm

Among dog breeds, it can be said that bulldogs are the most misunderstood. It is easy for people to assume that they are not easy to get along with simply because of their sour expression. Because they are not a very active breed, some even claim that their intelligence is not that high up the chain. People often confuse the dog’s often stubborn or lazy behavior for being stupid, but this is not the case, in fact they are highly observant and can readily tell if there are any changes in their environment and react to it with a bark.

The dogs’ lazy attitude can actually be attributed to its physical characteristics, rather than mental aptitude. Since they are compact and have hard time breathing, they are not very active and tend to be loungers. They may not rank high in obedience tests, but bulldogs actually know how to prioritize what’s important to them, which in some cases is to preserve their energy and prevent themselves from overheating.

Bulldogs are also thought of as fierce mostly because of their stocky built and sour face. In fact, most families do not prefer them as pets, fearing they might be aggressive with the children. In truth, bulldogs are one of the gentlest among dog breeds. They can be playful as puppies, but this mostly mellows down as they mature. Despite looking like they do, if trained well, they are actually docile creatures. Since they are not hyperactive, they can also thrive well in an apartment set up. Because of their keen sense of observation, they make excellent companions for all ages since they can easily pick up their owners mood. If you are happy they are delighted and if you are down, they will sit beside you and quietly keep you company, well, except for the occasional snoring.

Bulldogs are extremely loyal, loving and forgiving of their humans. Throughout the history of this dog breed, companionship has become their expertise. Like other dog breeds, they also have a natural protectiveness that they are more than willing to show if their humans and their territory is being threatened. Apart from getting along well with children and the elderly, they are also gentle to other pets. They can also easily get attached to their owners that some even hardly venture out the yard without their human companion. There have been cases where bulldogs tend to be a bit aggressive, biting and barking, however with proper training; these behaviors can be weeded out.

Being naturally affectionate, they also often try to get as much attention from their families as they can. With antics that can be described as the same as a child, they tend to act out if ignored for long periods of time. This being said it is also important to discipline them, requiring time and patience from the bulldog’s owners as well.

Overall among other dog breeds, bulldogs bring their own brand of affection, loyalty, playfulness and companionship that, if well suited, make their families happy to have them.
