There is Difference between an Alsation and a GSD

Posted in General | By: Mrs Manjeet Madra | 26 Aug 2011 9:52 am

With due respect to the commentators on the topic "Alsation Dog"- I do not consider my self an authority on the subject and may seem to be wrong to my more experienced brother/sisters, pardon me in case anybody feels offended by this effort of mine. It is by chance that I came accross the comments on this particular topic through google and  Dogs Spot (became a member just now to post my view which I wanted to sincerely share)

I wish to add that the differences of Alsation and GSD are phenomenol.

Background- We had a white alsation with a black nose with height much more by approximtely 4 inches (it was in the year 1960-1968). A photograph can be posted (black and white) after scanning sitting with two late ladies of that era.

Prior to the differences, let me tell you that I read in the early 1970s that Alsation was bred in Alaska for the first time by crossing a wolf. Discussions with non-professional people (yet knowledgeable), who gave their views on the topic (without reference to their source) revealed that Germany wanted to have its stamp on the GSD and gave the variations accordingly. So, here we go:-

Differences

1.   The Alsation can have a variance of colour from black to white (i.e. any colour).

2.   It marks its own territory with a radius of 2 to 3 Kms and can handle dogs without the master being around unlike a GSD.

3.   Straight back and hind legs.

4.   One man dog.

5.   Intelligent rating as above average.

6.    Can be trained for any thing and shall perform 100 % (in his sphere of intended use) like a Pit Bull.

7.   Thick bushy tail with very short coat (Remember the dog used in the Osama operation in Pak by America- he is on somewhat similar lines yet smaller in frame- Read Cairo the war dog whose breed is Belgian Melinois).

8.   Does not become overweight like a GSD.

9.   He can be kept without a leash without the fear of attacking a human in case trained accordingly and the beauty is that he does not get lost or stolen.

Hope that somebody with a personal experience can throw more some light rather than referring to the literature availble in the libraries.

Thank You for Your Patience Please.

Best Regards,

- Manjeet

hello manjeet g, thanx for providing difference between GSD & Alsatian. i had nt listen about d story dat in the early 1970s that Alsation was bred in Alaska for the first time by crossing a wolf but here many common people & breeders believe dat a desi breed dog with erect ears and with Thick bushy tail and/or with straight back is called alsatian dog.
but according to best of my knowledge, GSD were bred by germany and they were 1st used by their army during 2nd world war from where they were stolen by americans and americans named this breed as alsatian.

The 10th difference is that the tail never ever rises horizontally beyond the line of back even when excited (for whatever reasons).

HI , i would like to share that even now a days dogs are being bred by crossing a wolf , but any dog crossed and bred with a wolf , is called a wolf hybrid , and there are breeders who are keen on breeding just this particular type these dogs are commonly named as wolfdogs , true they are bred in Alaska with the timber wolf , and to the best of my knowledge the UK Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1919. as the German Shepherd Dog, however, at the conclusion of World War I, it was believed that the inclusion of the word "German" would harm the breed's popularity, due to the anti-German sentiment of the era. The breed was officially renamed by the UK Kennel Club to "Alsatian Wolf Dog" which was also adopted by many other international kennel clubs. Eventually, the appendage "wolf dog" was dropped. The name Alsatian remained for five decades, until 1977, when successful campaigns by dog enthusiasts pressured the British kennel clubs to allow the breed to be registered again as German Shepherd Dogs. The word "Alsatian" still appeared in parentheses as part of the formal breed name and was only removed in 2010., i.e. recently .

haha... it is funny.. sorry if i sound so rude, but why do u want to prove a point that GSD and Alsatian are different. it is common sense that these are both same and one breed. I dont want to repeat myself please read through the link by doggieBuddy.
the fact is most dogs, which are cross bred and not pure gsd, for the owners satisfaction call their breed alsatian. the fact is many badly bred dogs end up being called Alsation. the white dog by Manjeeth is probably a throw back of a recessive gene. or in simple words Albino. nothing wrong with the dog. but it is not a seperate breed. similarly many people think long coat gsd is alsation. it is like calling a hairy guy a separate breed different to a human. scientific studies have proved that GSD has nothing genetically common with wolfs. they may look like. but there is no proof. that gsd/alsation is bred from wolves.
having said that a well bred gsd is a wonderful animal. probably the best of all 400 odd breeds that are considered purebred. to know it one has to own one.

please search wickipedia. gsd can also be white or black but white gsds are not approved by the american kennel club. there is absolutely no difference between a german shepherd and an alsatian. the point 4, that it is a ONE MAN DOG is very absurd. dogs are pack animals and if socialised then there is nothin called one man dog. also i cant accept point 9. any dog if trained properly, can be kept without a leash and wont attack any human.
