One of the most unlikely sights in an Amazon / Ecuadorian Race is that of a tired and exhausted stray dog walking tall and proud with the team of Swedish Athletes.
Mikael & Aurthur
Amazon 430 mile Adventure Racing World Championship is a gruelling championship that combines hiking, trekking, mountain biking and kayaking over a successive number of days. Held in Ecuador, the championship covers three diverse geographical regions - The Andes, The Pacific and the Amazon rainforest.

The wonderful friendship started when an exhausted Mikael Lindnord and his team sat down for a meal before they began a 20 mile trek through the Ecuadorian rainforest and he noticed a scruffy stray dog staring at him. Feeling sorry for the dog, Mikael gave a meatball to him. As the team wrapped up their meal and continued with their race, the dog too started to follow them. As the team navigated the final two stages of the Championship, they befriended the dog and was eventually named Arthur.

Every task that the team faced, Arthur faced it too - whether it was pulling through knee deep mud during the trek or climbing the hills during the hike or even kayaking down the rivers. The team was concerned about Arthur’s safety and tried to leave without him, but Arthur was adamant and continued to walk along with his new found friends. Mikael and his mates took care of their new team member too, stopping when he got tired and pulling him out of the mud if he got stuck.
Arthur ready to leave for home
The friendship blossomed and 6 days later when the race finished, the team took Arthur to a vet for a checkup. The vet said that though the dog was exhausted and the race had taken its toll on him, he was otherwise in good shape. Mikael decided to adopt Arthur and take him back home to Sweden. He applied to the Swedish Board of Agriculture and luckily his application got accepted. When the team arrived at the airport, Arthur was there with them to board the aircraft and fly off to a new home, a new life!
