Bayer

Bayer

Bayer recently turned 150 and is still going strong as ever. This global chemical and pharmaceutical giant took birth on August 1, 1863, in Barmen – now a district of the German city of Wuppertal. Founded by Friedrich Bayer and his partner Johann Friedrich Weskott on August 1, 1863, Bayer is now Germany’s largest pharmaceutical firm, with its headquarters in Leverkusen. If that is not introduction enough, here is the clincher: Bayer is the manufacturer of the world-famous headache reliever Aspirin (which, by the way, is also perhaps the most sold drug ever). Not just that, the company actually invented it – well over a century ago.

The Bayer Group now comprises three subgroups (Bayer HealthCare, Bayer CropScience and Bayer MaterialScience ) and as many service companies (Bayer Business Services, Bayer Technology Services, and Currenta), which operate independently to a large extent. However, the management holding company continues to define the values, strategies and goals of the Group as a whole, all of which are – and have always been – based on the four pillars of innovation, research, sustainability, and social responsibility.

Given its philosophy and its global stature now, Bayer hands out way many more awards (through its numerous awards programs across the world) than it picks. However, among the more recent and significant awards that the Bayer has earned, its Canadian division was declared by Mediacorp Canada to be one of the top 100 employers in the country in 2008. A couple of years later, Bayer USA scored a highly respectable 85 out of 100 in the Human Rights Campaign's 2011 Corporate Equality Index.

There’s no question that the company has been serving humankind for quite some time now. But what has it done for the animals? After all, animals continue to be crucial to human existence as much for their utilitarian benefits as for their companionship. This question leads straight to the Animal Health Division – one of the four operating divisions of the Bayer HealthCare subgroup. The simple and primary goal of this division is to maintain animal health by curing contagious diseases and keeping pesky parasites at bay. Being a leading global supplier in the field of veterinary medicine, it manufactures more than 100 types of products, which are broadly classified under two categories: products for companion animals and products for livestock.

Below is a dekko at some of the most prominent lines of Bayer Dog products.

  1. Advantix: This parasiticide protects dogs against some of the most common external parasites, such as ticks & fleas, mosquitoes, sand flies and stables flies. It not only reduces the chances of dogs contracting parasite-transmitted diseases, but also lets the canines lead a stress-free life.

  1. Advantage: This one protects dogs – and cats as well – from fleas. The company claims that it kills over 90 percent of fleas on the infested bodies within six hours of application. And the flea casualty figure rises to 100 percent in a day’s time. The product can also be used as a preventive (for those who believe in that old proverb, “Prevention is better than cure”).

  1. Baytril: This range of antibiotic medicines is for the treatment of both livestock and companion animals afflicted by infectious diseases.

  1. Baycox: This product is highly effective in the treatment of coccidiosis in poultry animals such as chicken, turkey, pigeon and water fowl, among others.

  1. Drontal and Drontal Plus: This range is for the tackling endoparasites (all those roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms and their ilk!) in dogs and puppies.

  1. Catosal: This one-stop-shop of an injection can be used on all kinds of livestock and companion animals – and even those wild ones in the zoo – as a treatment against metabolic disorder, puerperal disease, infertility, weakness, anemia, muscle atrophy, stress, weak liver, and so on.

Clichéd as it may sound, the list above is by means exhaustive; another six equally important pet products can be listed right away if called for. But given what Bayer has managed to achieve over these past 150 years across the whole wide world, even beginning to narrate its story in a little more detail can be pretty exhaustive effort – not to be attempted without a couple of aspirin tablets at the ready!
