Difference between Neopolitan Mastiff and Cane Corso

Wag Wiki, last updated 08th, Jun 2009, Koteshwar

Hello All,

I was browsing through some sites and just got a bit confused. Can anyone tell me what is the difference between Neopolitan mastiff and Cane Corso, I know they both are different but they look alike and both are called Italian Mastiff. So which is the real Italian Mastiff because every mastiff which is from Italy cannot be called as an Italian Mastiff.

Also I had another question with Breeder's Diploma and I had posted it a long time ago but never got any replies. Can anybody tell me what is Breeder's Diploma; if we go to KCI webpage (https://www.thekci.org/tariff.aspx) it says Breeder's Diploma is Rs. 100. Is it a special course or an exam we write to know what is breeding or is it that a person can become a breeder only if he gets a Diploma in Breeding.

They dont look alike and should not. Unfortunately in India due to popularity of certain breeds, their standard diminish. For example is the neopolitan mastiff a great looking dog that is if you like his looks, but there are very few good specimens in India and mostly not good specimens that one generally sees.

A Cane Corso should not resemble the Neapolitan Mastiff, he can have minimal wrinkle in the facial region. The Cane Corso can have a minimal dewlap but it should not be excessive. When he is moving you should not see a rippling of loose skin vibrating through his body, what you should see is taunt sinewy muscles being flexed with each movement. The Cane Corso is considered a medium to large sized dog.

Just because a dog originates from a country it cannot be called Italian mastiff unless so named. A neapolitan mastiff is from Italy but is always called neopolitan mastiff. On the otherhand the Cane Corso is know by different names including Italian mastiff. Another example is the French Mastiff. Its actual name is Dogue de Bordeaux, but since there is no other mastiff know in france one can also call it French Mastiff, but not the case in Italy.

This is my understanding of these breeds.

As for the breeder diploma, I have not heard of it but KCI did have a breeders accredited scheme, where in you have to follow some guide lines if you are a good breeder and then KCI would make you a accredited breeder, in other words you will be know as a good breeder following good practices etc. This has to be renewed every year I think. You should also call KCI and find out.

Unfortunately a lot of people may be fond of dogs but are not really into dogs. For me dogs are my love and passion and I try to pass on what ever knowledge and experience that I have. Some may agree with me and some may not.....

I am from a family where for generations we have had a lot of pets and dogs and over the years I have picked up what ever I can. My first love has always been Rottweilers, but I have kept other breeds also, but Rotts I have trained and shown myself as a hobby and not money making business. I am from Lucknow, but now spend most of my time in the foothills of the Himalayas, where it is better for my dogs also. As for my name it is Dinkar.

Thank you for appreciating the work I put in. It is because of people like you that I continue to share my knowledge and experience. And also in the hope that people buy pets and dogs carefully so that there are less homeless pedigree dogs.

Thank you Mr.Anil,I got in touch with Mr.Bhat. But he said, he does not have any information , leaving his own breeds, and suggested me to get in touch with KCI. I live in Kolkata, which is does not hold much credibility in terms of dogs.
But help me with another query- which is the best bullmastiff breeder in our country?

Anil @ DoggiesDude
