Starting A Dog Breeding Business

I have loved dogs ever since my childhood. Over the years I have kept a number of dogs and finally I have decided to start with a kennel/ dog breeding business of my own. Since now I am independent, have a very supportive wife, I think if it’s the right time. Not to forget that my kids are also very fond of dogs. Characteristics pass down the generation through genes.
Although, I am yet to decide about the breed, the kennel from where I would get my pups and all that but I am starting a kennel that’s for sure. I have been pondering over this idea for the last couple of years and my resolve has become even stronger.

I have met a lot of people, interacted over the net and phone and the response/reaction was very discouraging. Why is this so? People import dogs for breeding purposes, buy dogs as costly as 50k-60 k, what for? Only for the sake of their hobby? No not possible.This business is like every other business ,can be run ethically and fairly and still one can make money out of it.
I understand breeding is a lot more than mating and then there are costs involved like c-section for the bitch during the time of delivery, vet bills etc. but then costs and risks are very much part of every business. One can play a fair game and still be able to make some money from dog breeding.
I seek advice from serious dog breeders regarding the breeds to start with, from where to buy the pups/ dogs for my kennel, initially etc. I am from Meerut (UP) and teach management. So dog breeding is not going to be a bread earner for me.
Request is to kindly help and support me.

The motive which you have stated about Profit, to be honest not many attain that status.This is mainly hobby and not business. And if any kennel is making profit it must have inner will and strength to sustain themself with quality for min 5-10 years. Once their quality, everything is proven then only i assume they would have made some profit. Like Mr Vidya from Meerut, his knowledge is great but he never thought of making profit from day 1. He learnt n learnt and i am sure he knows the max tips of breeding and handling as he is completely devoted into this.
So first minimise the number of breeds you wish , study a bit on it, try contacting couple of breeders of those breeds and seek help,
The point you mentioned that many people were discouraging was due to the fact that you might be talking about profit from breeding. and they would have told the experience that profit is NEVER possible in start... YOu need min 5 years to study a breed (when it reaches complete adulthood).

Fine if profit is secondary and love for dogs is the primary goal of breeding, go ahead we people are here to support you. My humble suggestion is to specialise in one single breed. But to start with start with 2 breeds or three breeds. Study which breed is best suitable for the climatic condition prevailing in ur place. Select a breed which will be best suitable for your kind of family. For Example ifyou have more time to spend for them you can go for even hairy breeds. If you can spend time of training them and giving exercise to them you can go for large breeds like Rot or Doberman. There are many sites there in internet to select a perfect breed for you. I started with three breeds and after few years I reduced to two and I am thinking of specialising only one now. Likewise you can also start with three and slowly come down to one and specialize on that. YOu can always see big breeders with one or two breeds. You can get suggestions regarding getting puppies, health, training and so on in internet. you can also get tips from breeders. Well sunny if some one is a true dog lover than recession doesnt matters recession is not only for dogs its for all i mean in our daily life i dont think this recession can stop the love of dog lover wats say

Thank you very much for all the support and suggestions. I had finally decided for either pug or beagles to start my kennel. All these days had been reading a lot about these breeds. I wanted to ask whether breeding a pug is easy or not, compared to other breeds. Is it true that pug as a breed is a very sensitive breed? I also read that Pugs quiet often require c-section for delivery. Is it true? . Plz advice.

Abhay I have written a blog on Upholding Pug Standards. Please go through that. Also please read a Book called Living with a Pug. Yes Pugs are high mainentance dogs. They do sometimes require a c-section for delivery. They suffer immensely in the Summer and need to be in airconditioned surroundings. They need to have their Anal Glands regularly drained, i.e. every month and also need to have their teeth brushed at least twice a week with canine toothpaste. I have two Pugs, a 26 month old Male and a 16 month old female. A Beagle is much easier to keep.

sounds a bit scary, but with pugs in almost every other home, i dont think all these people get the glands cleaned every month?

Anal Glands are cleaned mostly for Kibble fed canines..

Most Vets do clean the anal glands for Pugs as it is required Kibble or no kibble. Their eyes and wrinkles over the nose also need daily cleaning. Eye injuries are common due to the flat faces and large eyes and also the proximity of the muzzle to the eyes. Pigmentary keratitis of the eyes is frequently seen and needs very specialised treatment. If you are ever in Delhi or Gurgaon please let me know and I will be able to give you hands on advice. Also, your Breeding Stock should be carefully selected to rule out genetic problems.

this issue can be reduced as a high fibre diet is thought to help dogs empty their sacs naturally, Such problem occurs mainlyin toy breed or Obese dogs.

i also think you should think about what happens to the puppy when the family cant keep the puppy or dont want it cus its to much work. My grandmother was a beagle breeder she had a contract that made owners return the puppy or dog to her if they couldnt have it anymore she didnt want them to go to a shelter
