History

In earlier times, the Cocker and Springer Spaniels were developed together and it was not till 1892 that the Kennel Club of England recognized them as separate breeds. After this there was no difference in the English and the American Cocker Spaniel.

It was in 1946 the interbreeding of English and American Cocker Spaniel was officially discouraged and the English and American Cocker Spaniel were rendered as separate breeds. The English cocker is more popular breed around the world. The origin of this breed can be traced to 14thcentury Spain though.

Cocker Spaniels require a lot of attention when it comes to their grooming. The most important is to check its ears on regular basis. Just ensure that the ears do not have any dirt in them. You Cocker will lose its looks if it has untamed and tangled hair. Just remember that you will need to brush this gorgeous dog at least two to three times a week to maintain that lustrous feathery coat.

You should use a slicker brush to ensure that there is no dirt or debris trapped in it’s loose cut. You have to remember that the hair at this breeds tail and feet has to be trimmed every two months. If the coat is trimmed at regular intervals it will ensure smooth and lustrous coat for your dog. The English Cocker Spaniel is generally a healthy breed. It likes taking long walks so remember that it will need its regular walks at least 30 minutes everyday.

One of the most common medical problems that you will encounter with your Spaniel will be ear infections. You should check it's ears on regular basis and ensure that all dirt is removed from its ear. The droopy ears can be breeding ground for all microbes that give rise to infection.

A healthy Cocker Spaniels average life is around 12 to 14 years. Though a healthy breed as a whole, they are prone to some health ailments. The most common is progressive retinal atrophy that attacks the retina of the eye in your pet and can lead to partial blindness. This usually starts with night blindness in your pet.

Most of the working dogs are prone to hip dysplasia that is an abnormal growth in the hip bone.  It is a common problem with working dogs. To ensure a long and healthy life of your pet regularly check your pets knees, ears, hips and eyes.

Body

The first thing that anyone will notice about this excellent gundog is their ever wagging tail. The tail of the cocker is set below level of the back and is usually docked. The skull and the muzzle of your English Cocker Spaniel are of equal length. It has strong jaws and the nose is broad.

They have a broad and deep chest with wide and short lions. This dog has one of the best looking coats. It has a flat lying coat of silky hair that come in solid as well as partial colors. It has feathering on its legs and belly. They have well boned straight forelegs and very muscular hind legs. There adorable ears are long and set low, it hangs close to their head and is covered with long, fine straight or slightly wavy hair.
