Introduction

Bothy, a Jack Russell Terrier is the only breed in history that has travelled to both the north and south poles. A feat that can be never be repeated again ever. Why you ask? The Antarctica Treaty Nations of 1994 bans all dogs from Antarctica. So your Jack Russell Terrier will not be a part of the Transglobe expedition.

Jack Russell Terrier or the Parson Terrier is the same breed, which is just known by different names, these little energy bundles will light up almost any home with their antics. You will often hear the words vivacious and live wire associated with this breed. These adjectives describe the breed perfectly. These little mischief mongers were bred for phenomenal speed that was required to catch red foxes.

You would be surprised that this breed alone can spoil an entire birthday party with a whopping record of popping 100 balloons in less than a minute.  It is very important for present and prospective owners to keep in mind that this is a super hyper dog that will bite, yap, bounce and jump on almost everything possible.

The Jack Russell Terriers are the perfect dogs for both adults as well as families. They can also adapt to both apartment as well as yard style of living, after all which dog does not like a yard. The only word of caution for apartment dwellers is that one has to remember to give them an hour of free run every day to ensure that their energies are channelized properly.

Their quirky faces have made them a perfect choice for various movies and shows. Though, a word of caution if you are leaving this dog in the yard or the balcony in sun then ensure that he or she has their dose of sunscreen on!! This is a requirement to save the skin and coat. This strong willed and independent dog does not make training an option but it makes it a compulsion for all its owners. You get two different sizes for the same breed; one has a little longer legs than the other along with two option in the coat as well.

In the following sections we will help you to know your breed better or if you are prospective owner then we will help you test the waters before you select this breed.

History

Let us start from the beginning, the Jack Russell Terrier originated in South England somewhere around 1800s and owes its origin to the now extinct English White Terrier. The breed was developed for hunting red foxes both below and above the ground. This was the prime reason that they were given a compact chest that will enable them to fit into burrows. He developed two distinct varieties one a little taller than its counterpart.

Unique Aspects

One of the first things that you would see in your Jack Russell Terrier or the JRT is their perpetual jumping. You will be surprised that these little devils can jump five times higher than their own height. If you are not impressed by the statistics, think it this way the German Shepherd can only jump four times his or her height.

So, wherever you keep that coveted cookie jar he might just reach it. The JRT is a very friendly breed and will love to play and be with strangers and other dogs but you have to remember that with this breed the tide can change fast when it comes to other dogs. So, do not be surprised if the amicable relationship between two dogs suddenly develops into a combat over something as trivial as a chew toy. It is always advisable to supervise this breed even when it is playing with other dogs.

The other thing that always needs to be kept in mind is that JRTs are one of the best escape artists. So, it is absolutely essential to ensure that there is fencing in the yard and remember that this one can jump and it can jump high. So ensure a minimal of over five feet fence is a major requirement for this dog if you want to give it a free run.

Grooming

The Jack Russell Terrier comes in two types of different coats; smooth and broken. The only thing common between the two coats in the presence of double layer. The broken coat is a little longer than the smooth version with more hair around the eyebrows and the beard. Both the coats are straight. If you are bringing this dog home with the thought that they have short hair and will not shed then you are in for a surprise. The smooth coat sheds a lot so do not be surprised if you see white hair everywhere.

Your JRT will need regular brushing to ensure that all the lose hair from the coat is removed effectively from the body. You just need a firm bristle brush and they will need rare baths. The only thing that has to be kept in mind is that they have a sensitive coat so will require sunscreen when going out in the heat.

In addition to this you will need to follow the regular grooming regime with your pet that is brushing the teeth of your terrier, this should be done at least on a weekly basis as this will help to remove all tartar buildup and ensure a fresh breath at all times. This will also prevent various gum diseases in your pet.

The toe nails will also be required to be trimmed on a regular basis so to prevent any problems further as dog nails have veins in them and if it gets chipped then it can be very painful for your pet. You should always start this grooming regime in your pet from an early age as this will ensure that he is not temperamental with someone touching his feet, mouth or ear at a later stage.

Common Health Issues

These small and feisty dogs are generally a healthy breed but you have to remember when getting a puppy home that almost all and every breed can develop genetic disorders and they can also contract any of the common diseases. So this not a word of law these are some of the unfortunate cases that you can encounter with your dog at times.

One of the most common problems in JRT is related to the eye such as Lens Luxation, which is mostly a hereditary disorder in your Jack Russell Terrier. In this disease the lens of both or one eye gets displaced. There are two types of posterior luxation, one where the lens slips at the back of the eye and in the anterior luxation it slips forward. It can be easily treated through medicines and surgery.

Patellar Luxation is another common problem. In this kneecap slips from its place and the knee joint slides in and out of place causing a lot a pain. This can be easily corrected through surgery. There can be times when this condition is temporary and gets rectified by itself.

Jack Russell Terriers can also be prone to Legg Calve Perthes syndrome in this the ball section of the fermur on the hip joint deteriorates and cause limping in the hind legs. This commonly occurs in your pet between six months to one year.

Temperament

The first thing anyone needs to know about the Jack Russell Terrier is that they can range from anything between moderate to high. So if you thing that their small size will make them the perfect dog to just laze around in your home with. Then you are in for a surprise. They can be feisty and carry energy reserves that even exceed that of the Fox Terrier. Their energies have to be channelized to something productive otherwise these small turbo jets can create havoc in your home.

The JRT has a strong will and mind, which is best, suited for experienced dog owners. The first time owners will find this breed to be quiet a handful. These are intelligent dogs and will need a comprehensive training schedule on an everyday basis. You have to ensure that their mind gets the appropriate stimulation.

The high energy level of this breed may not be suitable for infants and toddlers as they can accidentally knock them off though with little elder children they can make faithful companions and pals. They enjoy playing and their abundant energy will ensure that your child is never bored.

This breed was bred to hunt foxes so he or she will not take kindly to other pets this even includes a cat, so unlike other breeds it is not restricted to small animal only. They are friendly with people but he or she might feel that catching a smaller animal is a good deed that will fetch him a reward from the owners.

Environment

The Jack Russell Terrier can adapt to all living conditions. This breed will be happy in an apartment and do extremely well in a medium size yard as well. They are extremely active indoors so if you want to keep them in an apartment then remember that it is integral to ensure that they are exercised sufficiently. If you fail to give him or her required exercise then you can have a coup in your hands.

It is absolutely essential to take your JRT for a long walk and preferably give them free run. They can adapt to any weather condition but remember one thing that they have a sensitive coat so it will require sunscreen whenever it goes out in the heat.

This breed will not fare well with other animals especially small pets. There might be times when they will thing that this is a prey and it is only doing you a favor by bringing it to you. This breed was bred for hunting and at times still retains that streak.

Training & Intelligence

Before you get a Jack Russell Terrier home it is important to know that you would need to give them firm and consistent training. So if you are a first time owner then it might just prove a little difficult for you. Training is integral for this breed, they are strong willed but you have to remember that if not trained well the pet might destroy everything in your home.

It is absolutely essential to teach your pet the difference between the outdoors and the living room. Training should start from day one when the puppy comes home. One should not be in a misconception that dogs will should be trained only after six months; in case of a JRT this might be extremely late to start training.

Toilet and crate training is advisable but you have to ensure that your puppy sees the crate as his or her home and not as a form of punishment. Their abundance of energy ensures that they will be willing to learn but you would have to make the training sessions interesting enough to catch their attention.
