My dog will not eat, what to do?

01 Sep 2010 | by | Posted in: Q&A

There are many causes of anorexia in dogs. The most frequent are fever, sexual excitation (for a male near a bitch in heat) or competition for food when a dominant dog keeps another dog away from the dish. Lack of appetite also frequently results from food that has been improperly stored and has spoiled.

When a dog temporarily refuses a food, which sometimes happens with dry food, addition of warm water will improve the flavour. Warm water thus becomes a simple, economical and effective “condiment”.

A dog that refuses to eat for reasons other than above should be taken to a veterinarian.
