With an increase in the complaints about stray dogs and canine bites in East Delhi, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has commissioned four new dog vans. The new vehicles - two big and two small - will be used to transport the stray dogs to sterilisation units in Ghazipur or to veterinary hospitals. The Delhi High Court has already advised the Animal Welfare Board to oversee the entire effort of controlling the stray dog population and to be readily available with anti - rabies vaccination in all hospitals.
The new vehicles should be able to increase the overall area or localities that EDMC will be able to cover. The two large vehicles have been equipped with 12 cages each, will help in rescuing more dogs from the streets while the smaller vehicles can carry three to four dogs each. The initiative was flagged off by Mayor Meenakshi.
The East Delhi Municipal Corporation Standing Committee head Mr B B Tyagi also added that the Corporation was looking for new land to set up Dog Shelters for stray dogs especially the ones who have been sterilized.
