For The Love Of A Puppy

14 Apr 2018 | by | Posted in: Humans Of Dogspot

Rufus came from the mountains. When I met him he was just 2 months old. He had been picked up by my son who carried him in the army convoy from the borders to Tenga to Tezpur, then Guwahati and finally I met him in Bagdogra. By this time he had spent a month with the army officers and jawans and was a seasoned traveler. The moment he was in the vehicle he slept peacefully in his cardboard box and baby blanket.

My problem arose when I had to travel from Howrah to Mumbai. We couldn't travel by air (he would be sent into the hold!) so webooked tatkal tickets and therefore no 1st AC either!andthe railways refused to believe he was a small puppy and did not issue a ticket for his travel-there was only one way out -smuggling him in a 2nd AC berth-luckily I had a sidelower and my husband, an upper berth!

Otherwise a playful and very energetic puppy Rufus displayed amazing survival tactics in the train- I had hidden him behind the curtains and was a nervous wreck by the time the train started and when I saw the TC I felt faint. Rufus crept into his basket and went into hibernation mode for 27 hrs. He just came out to eat and drink! For his 'routine' I would wrap him in my black shawl and whizz past shocked passengers at full speed and into the loo. Most of the times he was horrified by the sound of the train, so I waited for the train to stop and rushed him to the edge of the platform -he was amazing and didhis job instantly.

By the time the journey ended, I had a fever but Rufus came out of the train and went running after my husband and the coolie as if nothing had happened.

So believable. Had the same problem while bringing our lab pup to Tezpur. Mine's called Benjamin, and Benji for short. Much love and luck to you and Rufus. Your pet parenting is great!
