How Does Your Dog Apologize For Being Naughty?

16 May 2016 | by | Posted in: Wag News

One of the cutest things about dogs is that when they’re naughty, they KNOW it. And they try to pretend like nothing’s happened. If caught, then the dog looks all guilty with his/her droopy ears and wide, big eyes. So how do you know that your dog is apologising?

Dogs apologise by having droopy years, wide eyes, and they stop panting or wagging their tails. That is sign one. If the person does not forgive them yet, they start pawing and rubbing their faces against the leg. If the person is sitting down, they one-up the cuteness levels and sit down on the lap, while rubbing the muzzle against the person’s face and neck, and curling up against the chest. At this point it is too difficult to resist their cute as buttons apologising strategy, and it’s a ton easier to just give in and hug them back.

Dogs have a different approach to apologising than humans do. Instead of just saying sorry as humans do, dogs acknowledge that they have done a mistake. And of course, humans can not apologise as adorably as the little doggies can. It simply cannot be done!

Dogs also follow up on their preliminary adorable apology. After the incident, you will find that your dog is regularly bringing you little gifts home. You will be gifted newspapers, scraps of cloths, your OWN stuff, and even uprooted plants.

However, cute as it is, do not forget to forgive your dog quickly. If you are mad at your dog for too long, then it is actually very stressful for the dog, who can get feelings of insecurity. The dog may even shy away from being totally free in the future out of fear of angering you and gaining your disapproval. So do not draw it out too long. However, do make your dog know that he has been naughty. Do not overdo it.

Train your dog well from its puppy life, gently but firmly. So that he/she does not cause any major oopsie later on. But do try to make a perfect gentle-dog of your pet. That is not fair to their true selves. Dogs are like people only. They have their ups and downs. And also their right to make mistakes and learn from them just like every other person. So dogs need to make mistakes and learn that they have made mistakes and learn from those mistakes and then be forgiven to make other mistakes and keep learning. That is the process of learning for every living creature on the planet.
