International Travel :Getting a dog into India from another country

06 Jul 2010 | by | Posted in: Travel

Many times I have seen dog lovers struggling to get a dog into India from abroad. Not because it’s difficult, but in many to most cases because they do not know the exact rules. In this blog I will try and pen down the rules as known to me, request people familiar with the process can add on to the blog.

Source: wikipedia.en.org

I believe that it is very simple to get a dog into India. The first thing is to check about the basic travel rules from the country of origin. Mostly it will be about the age of the pet and specific requirements about certification / documentation. One has to ensure that the documentation is in complete in all respects. Below is the list of documentation that is required

  • A valid Health Certificate from the Department of Agriculture (could vary from country to country) certifying the health of the dog and also that it is fit to travel
  • The dog should be vaccinated (according to the age requirements) and the record of the vaccinations should be complete
  • The dog should be Microchipped and details should be produced
  • Export Pedigree of the dog and the kennel registration in the name of the new owner ( this is not a mandatory requirement if the dog is a pet and not registered with a kennel club)

After this it is very important to check about the requirements of the Airlines in which the dog is supposed to travel. Every airline will have its own specific requirements. Some of the requirements may include prior Quarantine clearance from Department of Agriculture (Quarantine) in India and submission of the certificate, a declaration about the acceptance for the dog when it arrives in India, etc. Once this has been done it is always suggested to book the pet in advance. This will ensure that there are no last minute surprises.

The requirements on arrival of the dog in India depend upon whether the dog is travelling accompanied or unaccompanied. For accompanied dogs you will be required to produce the above documentation at the arrival counter and the clearance if quite fast. Incase the dog comes unaccompanied, one will need to produce the quarantine clearance, get a complete custom clearance from the respective customs office, pay the custom duty and then only can the dog be taken. This is a time consuming process and normally take few hours.

This blog is based on my experience and I may have missed a few details. It will be great if people who have experience in getting a dog into India may add their comments.

Hi Gaurav,
i very recently went to get a puppy from germany specially and this is the following details i had cleared: (but you do need an agent as things work very smoothly & they are not expensive)
1) Copy of Vaccination records, like a pet passport. If puppy over 3 months it also needs a rabies vaccine done.
2) Health Certificate issued, endorsed and stamped by the government official health authorities in Origin country.
3) Veterinary Certificate for Import of pets into India.( Attachment should be endorsed and stamped by the government official health authorities in origin country.) Will be required to be sent there and get a scaned copy to yourself, later getting the original which will be sent back to the place of origin. complicated :)
4) Animal Quarantine Certificate from India, here which when you land will be given to you by your agent which is provisional and gets final after 30 days requiring a letter from your local vet.
5) Copy of passport of the owner.
6) If pet coming as accompanied baggage then you must have stayed at least 3 days in that country else the indian customs here will else trouble you.
7) Pedigree certificate is as per Kennel Club requirements.

Gaurav, one difference : no foreign airlines ask prior Quarantine clearance from India but you need to carry a xerox of the provisional quarantine certificate which is required by our customs here, AI & foreign airlines are far far better as they only see your:
1. Vaccination records (pet passport)
2. Health Certificate issued, endorsed and stamped by the government official health authorities in Origin country.

Microchipping is added where ever required as you correctly said in a pet dog case no chipping is ok too.

I can write lot in specific details but i can't type fast and get bored :)

Pet As Unaccompanied shipment (cargo) along with the shipping documents:
1) Health Certificate - (as per format)
2) Vaccination Certificate
3) AWB Copy
4) Certificate of Undertaking Form - 3D for Import of pet into India
5) Passport Copy
6) Authority Letter from Owner for the agent.
7) note all above documents are required 4-5 days prior to arrival of pet in order apply for import permit.
8) All the pets arriving as Unaccompanied shipment (cargo) are subject to Customs duties and taxes, Fine and penalty.

Regards,

niti.

Hi All,
Sorry could not reply earlier.
Nishant, i do get dogs for people from abroad and charge them my standard fee (not so expensive) and get what they want, even a litter from Crufts winners. The costing is very transparent & all possible account are given, sometimes i don't get a taxi reciept :).
Mr Ramakrishna, if you have imported where is the question that you went there? or did you get it as an accompanied baggage? well anyway, please request the kci secretary of your city informing him of the same. Also attach a xerox copy of your visa & relevant stamped pages when you went there, along with this, contact the breeder or the person you bought the puppy from ask him to get a letter from his kennel club stating that you (with your india address) have bought the puppy from there.
All the best to you all,

niti. (nitesh)

Hi, I have a couple of questions pertaining to traveling from the European Union to India with my dog (small Pekingese). Most likely will be arriving at New Delhi. As I understand the NOC will be required? Are there any custom duty fees involved? I have been trying to call the New Delhi AQCS but the phone has been unreachable this past week. Thanks

I happened to come across this blog and want to add my 2 cents.Since any pet relocation involves dealing with multiple government agencies, customs and more importantly the safety and well being of your pet, my suggestion is to find a reputable pet re-locator who would manage all this on behalf of you. The key emphasis being on 'reputable' ! Happy travels to you and your four legged friends!Anand

Clearing of pets from Chennai is comparatively easy than any other locations in India....and since, my company is registered with all necessary Govt. dept. this is quite easy for us...More than anything else, this is done for a very normal reasonable cost.....Even I am a breeder and in dog shows for the past 17 years...I am into having English bulldogs...Do keep in touch for any assistance in Importing a dog...starting from choosing the pup, sending the money, deciding the airlines, the airline routes, customs clearance, quarantine clearance and till getting it registered with Kennel club of India. My New year wishes to all happy owners of Dogs....
