The city of Manchester in London has recently been rattled by leaflets by a group called “FOR PUBLIC PURITY”. These leaflets call for a ban on dogs in public places, citing the reason that they are ‘impure’.

Distributed in the  Cheetham Hill and Salford areas, where the Muslim population is high, these pamphlets urge the public to limit the presence of dogs out of respect for Islam. The pamphlet seems to aim at non-Muslims and goes on to say that since dogs are considered impure, their presence in public areas tends to ‘taint’ or ‘blemish’ the purity of a Muslim.

While certain Islamic writings do suggest that dogs are evil and unclean, some believe that this whole episode is probably just a prank or a distasteful attempt to whip up unnecessary controversy. While a website and Facebook page do exist for this group, neither lists any contact details or information of any kind.
