Have you ever imagined in your wildest dream to be punished for good deeds? This sad catastrophe has happened in Kolkata in the previous week where a man was beaten to death by his neighbour for feeding stray dogs.
Baneshwar Shau , 50 was an employee of Howrah jute mill. The accused
Sambhu Bag tried to escape but was arrested and charged of murder.
Bag said that he hated the dogs barking outside their locality and that the feeding encouraged them to gather and create nuisance in the streets.
According to his friends and relatives, Shau lived with wife Rina and daughter Kankana in a South Baksara locality near the Botanic Garden. He would keep a portion of his salary aside and create a fund to take care of stray dogs. It was 11 pm on that night that Shau after finishing his dinner was about to feed the strays. During this, Bag came over and yelled at Shau for creating a nuisance outside his house since the dogs would bark all night long. “If i would not feed them, how would they survive? “ exclaimed Shau, a dog lover. “My love for dogs will remain, and I cant help that you don’t like them. I will continue to feed them . Do what you feel like” said Shau. Following an argument, Bag picked up a rod and beat Shau followed by head injuries. Shau was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead. His wife also mentioned that the neighbours heard the yells and shouts but were too busy to get involved and ignored everything. Some of them were too busy watching the Fifa world cup. She also mentioned that she believes that her husband could be saved if timely help was given to him.
Shau, a passionate dog lover was also into pigeon feeding and used to take unwell stray dogs to the vet every week or so.
It is quite a sad paradox where on one side we have hardcore animal lovers and activists and on the other we have hellish individuals like Bag who will go to extreme measures to display their hatred towards wildlife.
