When 69 year old German Expatriate Barbara Janssen came to Penang to retire, little did she know that she will soon be the Hero and the voice of the dogs that are on the streets and those that have been abandoned by their owners.
Along with her mother, Barbara moved to Penang, Malaysia and felt at home immediately. Even though she had never been to Penang, she fell in love with the city. It was one of those fortunate days when she truly found her calling when she rescued two abandoned puppies off the street. Instead of a grand and lavish retirement as earlier planned, Janssen today cares for more than 360 dogs in an animal shelter that she founded called 4Paws or Penang Animal Welfare Society in 2011 and is a committee with a stream of volunteers and helpers assisting Janssen in caring, feeding and meeting the monthly veterinary costs.
When 4Paws became operational, Barbara also had to deal with people who would dump puppies in her backyard or at the gate of the Shelter. Luckily with the help of her team of volunteers, she has been able to provide shelter and care to all of them. even though this is not what Barbara had planned, she has never been so happy in her life and is definitely living her dreams!
Hats off to you Barbara for making such a huge difference in the world and providing love and care to puppies abandoned due to unfortunate circumstances.
