I personally feel that the male dog has strong territory instinct than female dog. Else there might be a chance that your dog may seperated out very early from her mother/sibilings so that she might not get a chance to learn barking from her mother/sibilings.

hmm... wat i suggest after understanding ur situation u get her trained by some good trainer and ask him to train commands like-"bark", "attack" as early as possible. and kamal raj j kuppal sir dogs bark like we speak and even female after getting pregnant is very furious,....

but it is not good to train attack.as that can be very disastrous and not neessary for a natural watchdog as gsd.give her some more time and ask some trainer

Get her trained. Temperament is the issue and it varies in dogs.
May be your bitch have low temperament (its genetic)

No Issue we can make your dog to bark if some one knocks the gate.

1. Take your dog to outside your home check her temperament. If your dog feel comfort walking with you out side home you can train her easy with my ideas.
2.If she got afraid and pulling you back to home . you have to teach her to comfort with you while she is out of home.

Spend some time with your dog to play. while playing she will bark at that time say good speak make here under stand her bark is speak. Make some noice with ball in the gate if she barks say " Good Speak" do these three or four days after that touch the gate make the noise with your hand and repeat the training

My neighbour's female gsd is more territorial than my male gsd. So its not as issue.
Yes she may of shy nature or was taken away from her mother too early.
Try to find out what makes her bark...a loud noise, a cat, a new dog or somethng else. If u can find out a cause then u can teach her to bark when u want her to bark. Praise her if she barks at something & say Bark/Speak. Repeat this everytime she barks at something. Now say Bark/Speak randomly & praise her a lot if she barks. Gradually she will associate the word with action. Then command her to bark if the bell rings.
Be patient & consistant. Dont forget to praise her everytime she barks at ur command. She should learn.
