I want to adopt a Lab/Golden Retriever/GSD pup for myself, help me?

If you cannot pay say 10,000 to 25,000 for a pup, how do you plan to take care of it. These are big dogs and can eat quite a bit and not to mention medical bill and regular vacinations etc. The thought of keeping a dog or puppy is very nice but are you upto it financially and also the responsibility for the next 12 odd years. It will depend on you. So please be careful before jumping into things as we have a lot of abandoned dogs due to lack of knowledge of new owners.

Actually i am a trainee engineer At the moment (atleast for few more months), so i am not earning much currently to bear the initial costs of buying a pup. My Family will not allow me to spend that much on buying a pup either. But i can manage the other expenses (as they wont come together, and i have also saved some amount which will last for some time). I am also trying to buy one, but getting different quotes from different sources ..... Some are quoting 6k, others around 10 k for Labs, and 2-3k extra for GR. Can anyone tell a trusted source for getting the pups at a reasonable price in delhi ??
And as i said already that i am fully aware of the responsibilities and ready to accept them !! So abandonment will not be an issue here.

You can get a dog/ puppy for any price but generally a low price is for pups that are not quality and can later on have health issues. It is very important to see both parents and have knowledge of the breed you decide on so that you can judge for yourself if it is nice or not.

I do not advise you to get any dog right now. You are at the beginning of your career and you need to settled down yourself before taking someone elses responsibility. What if you do not get a job straight away or have to relocate to another place where you have to stay in a PG etc. The begining years of your career are a struggle you will have to work far from home and also long hours. What happens then to the dog. It will suffer. When things go tough or do not work out that is when people abandone pets or when they are unable to care for them and train them and find them a burden. These dogs require good exercise also. Will you have the time. I dont think so. So concentrate on your study and job and once you are settled with a good job, salary and family then take the big step.

Thanx for the advice bro. But i think i didnt made it clear before, but i Do have a permanent Job, and right now i am in the training phase. So it is more or less settled already. And I have two siblings to take care of him in case i am not available (rare chances though). Actually i just love dogs since childhood, and now i can get one on my own. Actually 4 days ago, i was getting a labra for free from a friend. But the circumstances prevailed against that and it didnt happen. Now i have searched on the net and the lowest quote i got is 5.5k for a Female LAB (Show quality, Imported Parents =as claimed by the breeder, KCI registered).
I think the price is quite reasonable. But How can i verify these facts ??
And as a first time owner, will there be any difference for me if i get a Female pup, instead of a male one ??

And about exercise, will 1 hr session in park (at around 6-7 AM) will do for the first few months ??

You can go check at friendicos or sai ashram for a lab, you can adopt one for free.

However I would say (if i may) wait a bit let things settle down and get a dog that suits your lifestyle. Labs r great fellows, but they have a tendency to put on weight, they need loads of exercise, they need more exercise then other dogs of the same size approximations.

There are many geat lab breeders.. but 5.5k for pup sired by import parents, dosn't sound too genuine. A lab from import parents can cost upto 15k, don't let them confuse u with import parents vs import lineage.

Show quality pup is a pup which has the right physical and tempremental qualities, there r few genuine breeders who know what they r talking about, and will give u their word for their bred pup to be show quality, takes alot to produce such pups.
Take a tour over to this breeders kennel and take a look at the dogs and their lifestyle, a puppies vaccinations cost well over 1500 for within the first 2 months.. if this breeder is vaccinating her (without which there is no point in buying this pup) is he really making no profit on this one.

Do your research, abt the breed about the breeders, about dog food and its budget (very important to have a dog on the right diet). Also do reseach on good dog handling, this u must share with ur family too, most of the time ppl r mad at the dog for mistakes they lead him into :) .. unfortunatly these dogs never learn what pleases their family.

If you make up your mind to buy a pup, make sure you buy from a good breeder, we must not support unethical breeding business's :)

And about exercise.. I am not sure about labs, but its not wise to over exercise pups(large breeds) .. u must not take them jogging etc just a little retreiving game etc ..
I have a 4 month old rotweiler.. i let her run in the park and exercise herself.. i don't excersice her yet.

Thanx a lot bro, I think i should visit their kennel in a day or two ..most probably tomorrow itself, as its very near from my office. And i think he meant import lineage (but he did used the words mom and dad were imported from Yugoslavia and Venezuela ). And i dont care if its show quality or not as long its a good and healthy lab. I am gathering info about LABS, GRs and GSD for the past one week, coz i dnt want to make any mistake regarding this. Coz it will be a life long commitment, so no half measures should be there.
There is one more ques i would like to ask:
Female Labs are significantly cheaper than male labs. So wat are the shortcomings of getting a female pup instead of its male counterpart ?? Are their any gender specific problems for dogs ??? As a first dog, wat gender should i prefer ???

Females are cheaper coz most ppl are reluctant to have them go thru the heat cycles.
During those times it becomes hard to walk your dog, on account of strays who even otherwise would follow the course of you r walk from a distance
also she may take it upon herself to seek out a male.

Some ppl have the bitches sprayed before the 1st heat cycle, this is not a good practice.
for my puppy.. I will consult a good rottweiler breeder.. and depending upon her HD/ ED disposition reports.. I will let those factors determine if she shld be bred or not... I will not spray her until she is 2 years of age, if at all.

And you can look up this breeders dogs at pedigreedatabase.com kennel name is part of a registered dogs name, so just look them up, the imported dogs wud haev the name of their original kennels attached look them up as well if you fnd that workable, so far i have found almost all registered dogs on that website.

And wat if the Dog is not registered there ? Is this a serious drawback ?? I mean do i really need a Pup with some hifi lineage or the Imported tag ?? I mean i am not looking for a show dog, it will be a companion, so do all these things matter that much ?? I just want a healthy and genuine Lab pup, so wat should i check for that ?? Or is it worthy to get a pedigree dog (as they say ) ???

No you dont need a pup with hifi lineage, as long as it comes from a family of healthy dogs, dogs are line bred selectivly to keep genetic flaws out.. when there is no selective breeding or when there is over breeding.. some health issues may surface.
You don't have to earn them a title to certify for their health or capability, a good dog can inspire alot of happiness.
If you feel well abt the breeder etc take a call and proceed.

PS - My dog is just 4.5 months old, but she is soo affectionate to us all I am happy to have a female puppy :)
and already she shows all the traits of a good watch dog.

Thanx again mate. Now today i decided to check a kennel (5.5k Show quality Fem LAB one ), i called the guy in the morning and he told me to come at 12. So i was there @ 12 near the location i was told on phone. When i called him he said that i should have informed him again when i was about to leave for his kennel, so it will take him 30 more minutes to reach there. I waited some time and then he showed up. He asked me to go with him at some center point where some one else will bring the pups, i said i was not buying it straightaway, i will need to see it first (as u guys advises some else here to check the kennel condition and environment). I think that made him upset, and he started to blabber "dekhne ka kya chakkar hota hai ...lena ho to lo ...itna time kharaab kiya and all". I tried to make him understand that its a long term commitment which requires one to be completely satisfied before taking the plunge. But it was of no use. So i just said him good bye and returned back. He was from Tegha Kennel in JanakPuri Area (delhi)

I dnt think i will going back there again in my life. Although he was quoting 8.5k for a good Champion line pup and 6.5 for a normal lab pup. So, can i get the same quote from a reputed or genuine breeder in delhi ??? Can anyone here point me towards anyone who can help in this regard ??? I cant spend more than that in any case.

I would never believe if sm1 says that I can get a show quality Lab in 5.5K. It is very difficult to get a show quality stuff in that range. A genuine puppy seller or breeder will tell you that afront. Two good ppl for Labs in Delhi I know are: 1. Sunil Ghai- 9811142338 2. Sunny Kochar- 9891149202

Unfortunately, Mr. Kochar is out of country for 1-2 weeks (Thailand i suppose) and same is the case with Mr. Ghai (out for country till 27th as i have been told). So any other breeder ?? I dnt want to get a puupy from a pet shop/broker/puppy mill etc.

Dont feel relieved Mr Admin, i aint going anywhere even if the search ends ;). U should expect many posts and threads from me once i get the pup, I have many doubts and i dont want to make mistakes coz its my first pet !!!

Do your research properly before getting the pup and only after you have done it and prepared your home get the pup. Do not rush into getting a pup. Wait for the so called good breeders of your area to get back. Atleast they will give you expert advise on the pup as it grows up and at different stages of growing up as and when u have a problem if at all, as they have bred labs for quite a while. I personally would recommend Mr. Sunny Kochar.

I agree with Kasmada. SunnyDale (Sunny Kochar) is known for labs in delhi. Ghai Sahib have one of the best lines imported from Australia and he is a very knowledgable person

Also- Dr D P Singh is a very reputed Vet and a very reputed breeder as well. Did you happen to talk to him?

D P singh ??? Any contact number ??? And i am not rushing into things. I am just collecting information at the moment. Without proper preparation, i wont take the plunge ! I am reading articles, visiting websites for the last 8-10 days to get more info about labs, handling of pups and other issues !! And i want to get the pup from a reputed breeder only, so obviously i have to wait for Mr Kochar and Mr Ghai to comeback. Looking forward for more tips from u guys as well. U guys are doing a great job.

I personally dont think much abt Dr. D P Singh, so be a bit vary.........I once went to see some pups via him and someone else and the pups were not kept properly, the mother, an import, was in a cage and aggressive, i dout it if she was ever taken out for walks or looked after. I also dnt think he breeds dogs rather is like an agent, I may be wrong, but I am sure about what I saw a few years ago....... Nor does he know much about the dogs past health problems or does not disclose it to prospective owners, as seen in my case.

Hmm. Okay, A new update. There is a vet near my locality, who is saying that he can arrange a Good quality lab pup (costing 8-9k elsewhere) for around 6k. So is this a viable option ??? How can i check the genuineness of his claim ?

U have to see both parents and the pup with the mother and other pups. That is why the breeders recommended are strongly advised but u seem in a hurry. Good things take time.

I am not in any kind of hurry. Just checking all the options. I am not getting the pup without checking all the options thoroughly, thanx for the heads up though !!

Can we know - who is the Vet? Ask your vet to introduce you to the breeder, u can promise brokerage to the vet to buy Transparency

He said the kennels he is related to are in Bahadurgarh and Sonipat. But he can arrange the pups to come here if i am interested. But i think i should pay a visit to the breeder myself, which can only be possible next weekend. So i can wait for the other breeds u guys mentioned here to get back to me. And i still havent received the pics and details from Sonya kochar (they did sent a follow up mail stating that they will shortly send the details to me) last night.

SO update : Today i received a call from Mr Sunil Ghai (thanx to RANA who gave me his number), and he is expecting a litter for his stud lab within a week. So as per norms, he can have the pick of the litter for himself. And he offered me the same. The Dame belongs to a very experienced breeder (30 yrs experience as told by Mr. Ghai) so i think this should be the best option i can have. But i have to wait for atleast 6 weeks for the pup, and thats not a problem i think. I am most probably visiting a kennel (nearby my place) today, just to have a look wat they have to offer. Lets c how things shape up !!!
