Hi my brother has a 6 months old beagle. The problem is he has a habbit of chasing smells. He runs after the smell and sometimes runs far off. On some occasions, the dog ran so far off that it returned only the next day. The owner then decided to either keep the door locked or keep the dog on leash. As it's not possible for them to keep the door locked all day, they keep the dog on leash.
This problem with the beagle is well known across the world. Being from hound family and having been bred to chase rabbits, beagles are smell driven.
My question is to what extend this behaviour in beagles can be rectified by training. If this can be rectified my training, then what training can be given.
