I am interested in showing my harlequin Great Dane in the future.?

Challenge certificate(cc), Championship(Ch), B of breed, group, B in show - conformation show dynamics ??? im a little confused. (1) - Is cc like a prize or just given to any(or a limited number) of dogs worthy to participate further in the same show or the next shows? (2) - Need 3 cc for a Ch. So,a dog can get only one cc in a single dog show? or 2 ccs from different judges? (3) - So a dog cant become a champion in a single dog show? (4) - A new comer dog cant compete for BOB, BIS ? im interested in showing my harlequin great dane in the future. thanks for your time

Broadly speaking in simple terms, your dog will need three CC to become a champion. After 3 cc he will automatically become a champion and you can apply for a championship certificate after that from the KCI. Only KCI registered dogs can take part in KCI dog shows. There are different categories in which your dog will be entered based on his age in the begining. Generally there are 2 shows side by side so you can enter your dog in both rings and if your dog is worth it he can get a CC in both rings at the same show. According to the new rule your dog need s to get atleast 1 cc after the age of 1 yr in order to become a champion even if he has won CCs before 1 yr also. But total have to be 3 and out of which 1 has to be after 1 yr of age.

Best of Breed is the best great dane in your case entered. Best in show is all the winners of each group/ breeds which compete at the end of the show. Out of which rankings are given 1 to 10. The dog which comes 1st is given called best in show. then there is also a best in show best bred in India. That is the best dog in the entire show and who also is a bred in India dog and not an imported dog.

Your dog has to be really good to win Best in show and best of breed or best in show and best in show bred in India. I have been fortunate enough to win these, but its not easy and you will have to really train your dog and be prepared to travel and attend dog shows.

But first read and see what the standards of a great Dane. Visit and see a show to get an idea what all you have to do. But most important of all you need to train your dog to be very obedient as he is big plus he should not be aggressive and should allow a stranger/ judge to see his teeth, feel his body and private parts, apart from standing still. It all cannot be explained but go see a dog show read about it on the net and read books and if you need any advise then let me know and i will try to help as much as I can.

By the way I dont know if you know there is a particular type of Harlequin/ colour combination which is desirable and the others are not. So do your reading on it too.

thanks a lot kasmanda. i talked to my breeder too and i guess it takes years to finish a dog's championship

yes i am very familiar with the great dane breed standard and have been reading and watching videos ever since i got my pup. his sire is a german import harlequin and has very good conformation and the dam has a uk import parent. so im hoping my pup turns out ok too. his marking is not perfect( white collar and chest broken with 2 or 3 black patches) he is a little heavily marked, but the marking is even. ive seen photos of horribly marked harlequins win too as long as their conformation is good.

my pup is only 4 months old now(he will turn 4 tomorrow). he needs to be 6 months and atleast 30" high to be qualified to show. so i still got time i guess.
right now i am training him myself and he can sit, stand, lie down, sleep, stay, shake hands, fetches most of the time, he forgot roll over a bit as i dint let him after his ears were cropped. im teaching him to heel. he is friendly to strangers.
one question i have is should i start using a choke collar?i know how to use it. Now i only use treats(he really loves food). my breeder says to use a choke chain.
in your opinion, will he learn faster if i use choke collar too? i dont want him to get aggresive bcoz of it

CAN YOU GUYZ SHARE YOU EXP IN TRAINING YOUR PUPS FOR SHOW AND WHAT MISTAKES TO AVOID?

THANKS

There is no harm in using a choke chain but use it correctly. I do not believe in pain training or hitting a dog to train. The best results I feel you get when training with love and treats.

Show training is very different although you must do obedience training to have full control of the dog at all times regardless of whether you show or not. There is so much to show training from stacking your dog to standing still in the perfect pose to show ring rules that it cannot be explained here, all of it...........and it takes years of practice. If you have any specific point then ask.
