Dr Gawande, Great Dane is not a dog for first time dog owner. They are big and require a lot of space. If you own big property and can afford a professional trainer, you can go for it. But just to caution you, Dreat Dane has lowest life expectancy which means they don't life very long. They are very unhealthy dogs and suffer from a lot of genetic disorders. This would mean you'll have to spend a lot of monry on Vets as well.

thank u for your reply. well i have read a lot about great danes. so i hv considered the costs n the lifestyle. i live in a 1200sq ft apartment which i was told is enough for a dane. but i wanna know if temperament wise he is worth buying for a first timer!?

Well, they are calm, aggression has been bred out of them. But, again, early training is required. They do require some one who has handled dogs in their life before.

Navjot i disagree with the Americans words of not to get a gaint dog as a startup companion.
Health will be good if the pup is from a quality stock and diet maintained properly of protein 20-22 and fat 12% level. But some vets give absurd solutions on diets/health on Gaint breed which causes complication.
Dr Amit..study the breed and its requirement and go ahead with a good breeder.
FYI first time buyers mostly go on price factor ignoring quality and land up in a mess for owner n dog. So get it from a good source

Hi Amit, We're not discouraging you from having a big breed but it's just that we'd like you to study their pros and cons before you take any decision. Good luck !!!

One of my friend has great dane, his dog is very friendly and unlike gsd and rott, this dog welcomes everyone and from my point of view, this breed need some sort of training to perform as watch/guard dog. The only problem my friend face on his dog is leash control, you need to be more powerful to handle this breed while taking him for walking again this can be sort out by leash training. All the best for your new companion. As far as i know vidane kennel is good for great danes. Do through check and buy dog only from prefessional breeder not from pet shops.

Kamal is Right. Vidane are pioneers in Great Danes breeding. Amit, if you are really serious in having a GD puppy. Call them on 9760888898. I met few guys from this Kennel when I attended an All breed KCI dog show in Delhi in March this year. They were exhibiting a litter of GD in the show. One of them give above no. so that I could refer any potential customer to them. good luck!
