My 6yr old Lab has developed a problem on his front left elbow joint, help?

I have 6yr old Lab. Lately he has developed a problem on his front left elbow joint. Xray shows that joint is rubbing against bone and there is small needle like growth of bone surrounding that area. Joint was swollen at first, a week after it was kept in crepe bandage swelling has gone. We are giving him "Maxima" Supplement along with Nurobion and MCab tablets. Doctor says he'll get ok through supplements only. But its been 20 days and we see no improvement, he still doesn't touch tht foot on ground. What more could be done to get him normal ? Please give your valuable suggestions... PS: He used to sit on Sofa Chair, and I think tht has caused him the injury coz when he sit on it, substantial pressure acts on the elbow and when he has to get up on the ground he has to life his body weight by giving pressure on tht elbow only. We are trying not to let him sit on Sofa but in our absence he sit on it :(

Contact Dr Pande in Pune... He might be able to guide properly. Do not work on advise of us as we are no vets and this thing needs examination by a qualified vet. Laymans can do more harm.

How much does your lab weigh? What is his height?

If he is overweight, losing a couple pounds will do wonders for helping it heal. Labradors are very prone to being overweight.

Thanks Anil and Navjot, can you give his address / phone number ??

@ pennypup, yeah you are right! He is overweight ~ 45KG... How to cut his flab ? I give him only 1 cup IAMS Lab Food + 1up Milk twice a day... My mom feeds him 2-3 chapatis since he is very fond of them and dont leave the kitchen unless he gets one :P

cut the carbohydrates..ie graines..means chapatis and stop giving table scraps and treats..give feed 2 times a day n not more.by showing more love you are infact harming her.. so be firm and give only feed 2 times a day n stop all sort of treats/table scraps.

Yeah, you'll have to cut all food but kibble. Iams isn't a great kibble and may be contributing to him being overweight. Try switching to Taste of the Wild, or Royal Canin.
Royal Canin has a Lab forumla. You should feed 5 cups of kibble a day. Split it into two meals of 2.5 cups.
Taste of the Wild should be 4 cups a day split into 2 meals of 2 cups.

He will need a lot of exercise, but it will need to be low impact.
Hw should go for two 30 min walks twice a day. (stroll if you can to keep the impact on his joints low)
If possible, take him swimming. Labs were bred to swim and it'S great, low impact exercise.

@ pennypup, Actually we cant afford Royal Canin or similar range kibble. We used to feed him Pedigree for first 5 years ! On the Doc's suggestion we have shifted to IAMS. Premium foods are out of reach as of now :( . Are there any homemade or natural supplements available to compensate nutritional value tht IAMS lacks ?
About exercise, there aint any Pet Swimming pool near my location, and his Doc has suggested to give him little exercise to ensure proper healing of the joint. So I guess I cant get him enough exercise until his joint gets normal :-/ ...

PS: He had shown the signs of hip dysplasia 5-6 months ago, but as of now he is fine. I'm afraid he wont be able to walk if his front leg dont get healed and hip dysplasia intensifies :(
