What are the chances that my stray pup could have rabies?

I have adopted a stray pup who is 6 weeks old now and has been with us for last 3 odd weeks. He hasn't been left unsupervised during his stay with us. He has been vaccinated with 7in1 & Corona virus. My vet had suggested that he would be vaccinated for rabies after he is 3 months old. My questions are 1. What are the chances that he could have rabies? Can rabies get transferred from Dam to Pup (though his mom is still sane)? 2. Is it advisable to get him vaccinated for rabies now, rather than waiting till he is 3 months old? 3. What should be the course of action if he bites or accidentally scratches someone? Regards

Yes, puppy can get infection from the infected dog. Rabies can be transmitted through a wound or broken skin when in contact with the saliva of a rabid animal, e.g. even when there is saliva on an animal’s claw when it scratches to other. For transmission of disease from mother to puppies please fell free to talk to vet. You can get your dog vaccinated form vet to prevent from infection and booster dose may be given later.
