Which Breed of Dog Should I buy, Personally I like Doberman and Golden Retriever a lot, help?

Hello All I have a small family with 2 kids at home. I live in apartments. I would like to bring home a new member. Since we have good experience people wanted to take your opinion on which breed should I go for. Personally I like Doberman and Golden Retriever a lot. Not sure if they gel in good way with my family and kids. My kids are 6 and 3 yrs of age. Also I am not interested in my pup to be part of any show hence I am not look at very high show quality pup, with that said, I am also not looking at pet quality which on longer run have health problems, excuse me if I am not correct, but this is what all expert have said on all forms. Can you all help me with your opinion, I am fine if you are recommend different breed then what I like and what it would cost me and which place would be good to get my pup. I am in Gurgaon. Thanks Himanshu

Hi Himanshu
Since you live in an apartment and also have small kids I would tend to think that the Golden Retriever is a better breed for you, provided you exercise it properly and take it out for regular walks. A Labrador would also be a good choice. Dobermans need firm handling and tend to be high-strung. Another breed you might take is the Beagle which is the right choice considering your kids are pretty small - a big dog could actually bowl them over while playing. Please make sure you never leave your children unsupervised with the dog - for both their sakes. Children can unwittingly be very cruel to small pups. All the best and let us know which breed you have taken :-)

Thankyou Barkindmaddude, for your inputs, I understand the comments around Doberman since that breed need very experience handling. Does Golden Retriever has hair fall problem a lot since my kids are small, I dont want the hairs of the dog to be all around the places. Any clue about what would a good golden retriever, lab and beagle costs (no pet qlty.) and any clue around good people/ breeders to contact for getting a pet home ?

Hi himanshu,
As u have house wid kids , u should go for a Labrador or a Golden retriever , both are non aggresive breeds and go wel with kids, dobby is bit aggresive but as u will go for a puppy it should also go well with kids
Most of the breeds have the inherdited health problems due to inbreeding and lack of gene pool
the best options is to buy a puppy from a reputed breeder and if posible check on the sire and dam ,it might cost u a bit more then a local petshop but can gaurantee a good dog .

I would recommend a Golden- The temperament of the Golden Retriever is a hallmark of the breed and is described in the standard as "kindly, friendly and confident".
The typical Golden Retriever is calm, naturally intelligent and biddable, with an exceptional eagerness to please.

I am a proud owner of Golden and I live in Gurgaon

Pet quality - A pup or a dog is termed pet quality for a reason, it does not mean that the parents are not champion or not of good quality. A pet quality dog is a puppy who may have a fault in terms of the breed standard, for example a dob may have a small white patch on the chest or the ear and or tail of a particular breed is not the way it should look or fall like as per the breed standard of that breed. So always go to a good reputed breeder and then ask for a pet quality puppy and not a show quality pup, Not all pups in a litter are show quality regardless of what a breeder may tell you.

Dobs are out as you do not have experience in dogs I guess and they need an experienced hand/ owner. Goldens are nice but keep in mind they are large dogs who need good exercise and regular brushing. Labs are like goldens but less brushing.

What you need to see is that do you have the time for a puppy right now with 2 young children who are I guess as it is a hand full. A puppy needs a lot of care, love and time to train otherwise suddenly you will have an untrained dog who will be a liability rather than a pleasure. Big dogs need space although they can stay in apartments as long as you take them out for regular long walks etc. Also keep in mind vacation time, busy office days, children activity days, etc, will you have time then to take care of your dog and who will take care of it in your absence.

If you still are adamant to get a dog may be you should get a friends dog for a week and see how it is. Another good option would be to go for an adult dog at one of the shelters. They will be trained and will not dirty your house. There is a GSD available in Delhi if you are interested. Beagles are nice too but have a loud bark and can become very noisy if left alone and then ur neighbors can complain.

Decide wisely and if you have any particular question, ask...
