The German Shepherd Dog originated in the Alsatian Region of Germany. Today it is used world wide as a sentry, police dog, tracker, drug dog, search and rescue dog, and guide dog for the blind. The official name for this breed is German Shepherd Dog , though it is often called the German Shepherd or just Shepherd.

The German Shepherd Dog is unique because it has a very short colon in comparison to other breeds of the same body weight. For this reason a high fiber diet is required to slow the movement of food through this breed's digestive track, thereby allowing more time for the nutrients to be drawn out. This high fiber diet will result in a larger stool but better assimilation of the food. caution that this fiber must be from the proper sources and the amount should be carefully controlled. Too much fiber or fiber of the wrong type can cause impacted bowels.

The environment for the Alsatian Region of Germany provided this breed with primary food sources of beef, wheat, and leafy greens like cabbage and alfalfa. Thus, a blend of these food sources as the ideal base diet for the German Shepherd. Conversely, the worst commercial food blend for the German Shepherd Dog would contain fish, soy, or rice

Anil,

The explanation for GSD's food is very easily understood-able. But do you mean that there is no commercial foods available with the combination of ingredients which you have mentioned ?

Since 70% of any commerical diet is chemical etc, i doubt if they have proper proportion in it.also studies done long ago said that pets (dogs n cats) live min 2 yr longer if fed on /barf/home made diet

I feed my GSD's mostly chicken and meat(goat) , the beef i tried but sometimes its hard for them to digest so i switched to the other two and yes i give bones to my dogs it helps in the development of strong jaws and even helps in better development of the skull bone and i prefer giving home made food to my dogs from when they were pups and i never had any problem with them , i started with mashed chapatis in diluted milk and gradually switched over to chicken , meat and rice and vegetables.

If you want to feed non veg, its said BARF ( biologically appropriate raw food) and PMD ( prey model diet ), ie 80percent meat, 10 per cent bones and 10 per cent organ are best for dogs. In both diets raw food is fed. If you are uncomfortable feeding raw meat then you can boil it but remember to remove bones.
