I am planning to buy a harlequin and i have been touch with a reputed breeder, help?

Hello , i am indu from chennai. i have been living with dogs but i haven't tried a Great Dane. I intend to get a dane and exhibit in shows .I am planning to buy a harlequin and i have been touch with a reputed breeder. My friends advise me that i should go for fawn or brindle .They say that judges prefer only these two colours is it true? Also i am told that for harlequin and black they do not compete with regular colours .in dog show. I would request you to help me in this regard. Thank you,

Great Dane's are very large dogs so first of all you need to see if you have the place for one and the time and money to feed such a large dog, not to mention tghe medical bills etc. If you plan to keep it in your backyard or so do also keep in mind the amount of tool it will be passing.

Do your research on the breed and also the breed colours which are exceptable. At time its not easy getting a good harlequin colour, so firstly research and understand what this colour is and what is acceptable. You mention that you want to show, but what is the main purpose just show or later breed the dog too. Its not easy to breed harliquins and get that perfect colour in the litter and you may also get a lot of colours like mantle etc which are not prefered by people and hence the problem of finding good homes for them.

All judges have there own opinions and likes and dislikes, but in the end its a good specimen that they look for. because of the above reason most commercial breeders avoid the harliquin or even blacks.

There is an FCI show down south this year check with the kennel club of India and also visit any speciality great dane shows to get a better idea of the breed and then accordingly decide on the breeder. Do not go for the closest breeder near you or the cheapest one.

All The Best

Hi Dinkar Singh,
Thank you so much reply. .Yes i am aware of the fact that Great Danes are expensive and needs lot of space and it is going to cost me some money for their maintenance.Iam trying t understand from materials available from the web site and i am constantly talking to lot of people in this regarding Great Danes and their colours. .i have just come back to India for good, fortunately my husband is also a dog lover hence we thought we could get one Dane. Regarding the show it is purely for the love of sport and i do not plan to breed it for commerical purpose. I had dogs before marriage and few of my cousins are regularly showing their dogs in shows. Hence we decided to go in for Harlequin. I would be thank full to all of you if you could advise me in this regard. Thank you.

Check out this website http://www.gdca.org/

Also there is a difference in the European and American ones. The american ones are preferred here in the ring, but I prefer the traditional ones which are the European ones and more solid built.

Hi Indu, It was nice to hear abt your fascination for this breed and I will say that i am fortunate enough to have one. Just like you, i too was skeptical in the beginning but truly speaking i have no regrets for my decision. I have had labs, GSD and spitz earlier but nothing like having a dane. I am not a breeder and what i have is a pet so i might not be the right person if you r specifically looking from that purpose however in both the cases what is important is that you get a right dog. As Mr Dinkar has pointed out, specifications in this breed r very important. It is a giant breed and any deviation from the same will mean a lot.
Firstly u must check the lineage of the dog both in terms of temperament as well as body structures as there are a lot of back door breeders who will claim for the best but.... Actually danes take a lot of time to mature and by the time you come to know abt the problems, your dog might have already become a family member and then it becomes really painful as neither u can part with him, nor you can show him either.
As per colour is concerned, though fawn is the fav colour in India, I have a black girl and harls are beautiful.
So, best of luck with that and keep us informed.
Regards
Saurabh

Hi Indu,
In india the 5star ratings brands will available only by requesting it from branded pet stores, Science Plan and Royal Canin is the best premium brand where most of the reputed breeders use in india. I have used science plan for my lab and it really worked well. Now my lab is under BARF diet, this is better than all premium packed foods.

Hi Indu, Now again it i quite confusing. Have u got your Harl pup?? or it is still in the planning stage. As far as food is concerned, Royal canin is good and probably the best available in India. I was giving the same till almost 15 mths of age however after that she herself stopped liking its taste and now is on pure home cooked meal. The same comprises of Rice, 2-3 green vegetables, Carrots, Potato and Chicken all cooked together. Oat meal is good provided your dog is not allergic to the same. Generally dogs are allergic to wheat and wheat based products. Believe me, if you r skeptical abt quality of a commercial kibble, switch to this diet and u will not regret. Also add milled flax seeds powder as a daily supplement to his diet.

Saurabh

Hi Indu, Congratulations for the new member. As per feeding i concerned, it also depends on puppy's age too. I will suggest you read instructions at www.greatdanelady.com. She is a pet nutritionist and though he feed she projects is not available in India but you do tend to get a lot of information regarding Danes.
Royal Canin is best brand available here. Though little expensive but results r good. You need to feed your pup 04 times a day initially which subsequently will be reduced to 02 times. As per your question abt morning feeding is concerned, same kibble will do and the instructions r on the pack itself.
Also don't give milk as most of the Indian families do, rather give him paneer and curd.
Regards
Saurabh
