We are getting our first dog, a Lab, please guide us?

Hello!! My name is Abhijeet & we are getting our first dog, a lab, on Saturday. We are getting the dog from our friends whose dogs are the parents. The mother had a fungal infection & has not been allowed to feed the puppies, so they have been bought up on formula & some semi solid food as advised by the vet. They had their first vaccination on Friday. The pups are 5 weeks today & the vet has given an OK to give them up for adoption. we will take him to the vet on Sunday but basically will like to get everything that we can before that. We have already left an unwashed tshirt & small towel with the litter to get him familiar to our smell & also get the smell of his brothers/sisters to keep him company for the first few days. Have made a list, please suggest if we should get anything else or any other pointers. * Medium Size crate, will upgrade later: what size should it be to last for 6-7 months & where can a buy a wire mesh one in Gurgaon/Delhi * 2 Bowls * Treats - Plese guide which type * Toys - one stuffed with the eyes removed & will decide the rest at the shop * Fleece blanket & towels. * 2 play mats Also should we use a heater or heating pads. It's not too cold right now something around 15 Celcius. Thanks for all your help!

crate i do not understand as i would like the pup to have complete access of the hosue to understand his region. there was no need to leave the scent as remeber that any dog takes about 21-27 days to adjust to new surrounding. all he would need is constant company and love. treats can be avoided for another months as teeths might have not come up fully and strong. give panner in place of treats (commerical ones). two bowls needed..one for water (always clean) add 2-3 drops of lemon juice in iit ..balances pHvalue in dogs. toys like tugs, kong some sound creating balls..you get wide options in a pet shop. avoid heater as it might dehydrate the pup. a dog bed is there in market for abt 500 INR ... get that for the pup to sleep. Rest for medical aid consult your vet for calcium intake and other supplements.
Enjoy the great puppyhood.!!!!!

Hi DoggieDude, Thank you for the tip regarding ph value. What is panner? Do you think that I should get a collar/leash right now? Also should I use news paper in the balcony to get him house trained or is it all right to take him outside?

Regarding the crate I appreciate where you are coming from, I used to be of the same opinion with my previous dogs ( A Pomeranian & later a Cocker Spaniel) but have recently had the pleasure of meeting a family who crate their dog but not as a punishment but like a den & for small intervals while the dog is alone in the house. I run a creative agency & have a studio at home with crazy amount of wires in two rooms so anyways complete access is completely out of the question till he has matured enough. Hence the crate.

paneer is cottage cheese. just have a collar for him ..no leash coz vet would not recommend to take pup out on road unless rabies shot is given. collar is ok so that he gets usedto it. yea crate as place to rest is perfect. but sometimes people just thing it as a confinement place.

On another note. Where can I get a clicker from, I've tried all the shops in Gurgaon but no one seems to have any idea of what I'm referring to.
