Can anyone give me the solution for the following problem with my 16 month male Lab?

Hey Guys Can anyone give me the solution for the following problem with my 16 month male lab He is not barking at strangers. Though he barks at children playing out side my house, he does not react to visitors He barks well when hungry and agitated. Is it a common character of lab breed. Is there any method to make him a good watch dog. Experts help me

Labs are not supposed to bark much - were used to retrieve stuff, and later were used in retrieving the game- if they bark the game will fly off
