I have one question here regarding GSD, please help?

Hi, I have one question here regarding GSD. I watched many GSD and I found that some have short hindquaters with long body and some are tall with long hind quaters. Hind Quaters here I mean back legs/hip part. Which one prefer to be best? either one with short hindquaters with long body or one with long hindquaters and tall. Regards Kamal

According to breed standard gsd has a longer body than tall.
According to AKC "The German Shepherd Dog is longer than tall, with the most desirable proportion as 10 to 8½. The length is measured from the point of the prosternum or breastbone to the rear edge of the pelvis, the ischial tuberosity. The desirable long proportion is not derived from a long back, but from overall length with relation to height, which is achieved by length of forequarter and length of withers and hindquarter, viewed from the side".
The desired height for males at the top of the highest point of the shoulder blade is 24 to 26 inches; and for bitches, 22 to 24 inches.

Hi Runni,

I agree with AKC standards which define GSD dogs are as long than tall. But while surfing in internet I saw something called FCI Standard i.e. The standard where europe follows, this is the actual standards where germans defined for GSD, In their dog pics, I see the Hind Quarters are strong and taller than the AKC standard GSD.

I read the information about FCI standard in this website https://www.workingdogs.com/ls haw1.htm

Here the author compares DOG D(FCI Standard) and DOG E (AKC Standard). What I understand is FCI standard looks better.

Yes no doubt FCI std looks better but even FCI agrees that gsd is longer than tall, may be not as much long as AKC std. That is the ratio is more than 10:8.5 (fixed by AKC). AKC also says that the length must not be due to a long back, but be due to long hindquarter & forequarter when viewd from side.
