I just want to know is this a general behaviour for rottweiler or he is very young?

Hi I have a six months old male rottweiler. This dogs is very calm and good natured. He is very playful . But one thing I am concerned about is this dog does not bark at strangers coming to home. He will not bark at all. This is my first rottweiler before this i had two German Shapere and they used to be very good guard dogs. So I just want to know is this a general behaviour for rottweiler or he is very young. If some stranger comes to home he will just look at and dont bark at all. Please tell me what should I do.

Rottweiler will scarcely bark in comparison with the GSD's, also he hasn't matured yet. Rotties will bark only when they mean business, how well does he interact with them? you'll soon notice that he will not be very keen on the idea of strangers petting him, my rotty (also 6 months) .. she dosn't bark at just anyone who rings the doorbell, but instinctivly barks at certain ppl, and won't allow ppl to pet her until she has checked them out first

Encourage him to goto the door with you each time you're answering the doorbells.

This is a guard breed and one of the best I have come across. Please do not try to heighten aggression in this breed as guarding comes naturally to them. With age the guarding instinct will become more and more, specially with males as they are very territorial. I hope he is very well behaved and train him really well otherwise with age you may have a problem. Also keep in mind that they require continous reinforcement of commands as they will try to rebel every now with age. They mature and come in full size by about 3 odd years. So be patient and exercise him well.

Socialisation is also a must/ getting hi used to all sorts of situations and people. Remember he will be maturing into a big and very powerful dog.

Rottweilers are a great dog to enjoy the right way.

It is the general nature of the Rotts. They dont bark and they use their big body to conway their presence.
No stranger dare's to approach a rott after seeing the wrinkles on the fore head when they are in alert position.
