In spite of Pedigree being one of the most popular dog food brands in the world?

In spite of PEDIGREE being one of the most popular dog food brands in the world, breeders in India do not mention or advise it. I have heard good things only about Royal Canin, Eukanuba and other costly brands. Is it the case of being "the costly the better". I am no breeder but I tried the professional range of PEDIGREE on my Great Dane (Zorba The Roak, check my profile for pictures of him), and I must say it has worked well. Lastly, let me know are there any people who advocate PEDIGREE?

In a way yes, it is true with dog foods..the costlier the better..because premium brands have real meat and do not have any by-products or grains, unlike the regular brands such as pedigree. In United states people hardly use pedigree . If you want to know more about dog food..and how to find the right one for your dog...check out http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com /. It has really good information and reviews about dog foods in United States. According to them pedigree is not recognized as an essential nutrient by the AAFCO dog food nutrient profiles and is given only 1 star rating out of 5.

Hope this helps !!

RC has NOT been even considered to be analysed by many group since last 3-5 years. It does not stand in STAR 3 rating

No good kibble is normally available in Indian stores. In my opinion Royal Canin, Eukanuba and Pedigree are substandard foods. Feeding RAW is a better option here.

ps: if dogs survive on discarded bones from cooked meat/meat gravy, vegetarian table scraps, milk/bread and other such stuff which should never go inside them I am sure they will survive on the dog-foods available in our market.

A breeder asked me to feed beef, but everybody knows feeding beef in a orthodox Hindu society is difficult, and mutton is too costly for me. I have tried RAW chicken (1 & 1/2 kilos per day for a 8 month Dane) with rice, but its just a personal opinion that the coat looses its luster. Has anyone tried RAW with good results on a puppy, and if so what has been the effect on the coat?

Hi to all,
Good updates especially regarding flax seeds.
I do agree that there is a lot of myth regarding feeding especially for giant breeds like great danes.
I also have a great dane and hav asked a simm question some time back.
There is a lot of information available on the net and rightfully said most of the vets/feed suppliers are clueless and they advocate a particular feed for all the commercial reasons. My dane was on RC starter till abt 02 mths of age and since then i shifted to Venkys Regal Pup. Its less proteins than RC, is a chicken based meal (no by products), affordable (pack of 15 kg costs 22-2300), has glucosamine and other imp ingredients and my dane is also liking it a lot. She is 04 mths now, is more than 25kg and stands tall with a beautiful coat. Since she is black, a shiny coat is visible more. Try it out.
Regards
Saurabh
