Rabies is basically diagnosed in animals by the physical presentation of either the Restless "Mad Dog" aggressive drooling unnecessary biting phase OR a Dumb Paralytic quiet phase both of which invariably lead to death.
There are no lab tests available except for Brain biopsy after killing the dog and demonstration of structures called negri bodies inside the neurons. Various techniques are employed from fluorescence microscopy to Electron microscopy.

Thanks all. The abandoned Indian Spitz that we had adopted on Oct 17 had a gash that I felt could have been caused by a dog bite as it was found by a foster home (a couple of weeks earlier) surrounded by stray dogs. No signs at all (it has been nearly a month since being found) as you have all mentioned as well as stated on phone by Dr. Manish, government animal hospital, Gomti Nagar, Lucknow. It eats well, regaining strength back, and wants to play ball/fetch.
