This is meant for people going after cheap price rather than quality?

This is meant for people going after cheap price rather than quality. All these days we have talked a lot about ethical breeders, backyard breeders & brokers in the pet world. And in my short interaction with the knowledgeable bunch in this forum, I bought a pet which cost me five times than it would have cost me at a pet shop. I dont regret it because people admire it ten times more, and thats the credit of having a true healthy specimen of a breed you look for. In India the breed standard of all breeds of dogs are so much diversified that sometimes a Rott is mistaken for a Dobe, a GSD for a mongrel and so on. I remember seeing a old english mastiff which looked like a stout Dane. This is undoubtedly because of ill breeding & also I must say selling to a owner ignorant of that breed. The second mistake can be rectified if we buy from a proper breeder who can assist us in the upbringing. Now coming to the first cause, I personally would like to see breeding of dogs made a licensed business, so that the useless bunch are restricted to a major extent. Eventually, it will happen as livestock businesses like cattle & poultry, remember I am not comparing this to breeding of dogs as dogs dont serve us milk or meat. But for now we can serve this magnificent companion of our since many thousand years by practicing stern policies for backyard breeders, pet shop owners and brokers as well. These people are ruining the genetics, the temperament, the shape, size and more importantly the view of a layman. Eg. Dobermann is one the finest breeds to have been bred in this century, but its image in India is one of those cheap priced short- tempered dogs that common people who keep dogs to shoo away strangers love to have. Some would agree that even Lab, a more common dog here, hardly touches its requirements. What I have spoken above is not to defame, underestimate anyone but it came out as a passion for the love of my pets. Lastly, I must warn the people in this forum that some sellers in the puppies available section are presenting fake pictures, do not mail papers of parents before buying etc. I would advise friends not to look for people having multiple sales at a time. I would also like to ask Dogspot.in and senior people here to oppose sales of pets which are not bred for the betterment of breed but of the sellers. Please oppose to backyard breeding.

Strongly agree. In dogspot there are a lot of puppy millers and brokers.
Make rule of uploading dam/sire papers and manual approval to make the puppies available section a great piece of information.

I must say I have become a fan of yours, I truly buy your thoughts. But Nolin dogs are domestic animals, had not been domesticated they would have wandered, as dingos in Australia & wild dogs as in Africa. Modern day dogs are bred to suit its owner. But we have sadly exaggerated it as in case of GSDs. All we need is careful breeding, not natural breeding as in the wild.

Hi Nolin,
I strongly beleive each breed should follow its breed standard. For example it is ok for a rottweiler to be selective in meeting people and even little aggressie but a Golden retriver should never be aggresssive and should be friendly towards every body. When I buy a GR I expect it to be friendly and follow breed standard. I am willing to pay extra for a reponsible breeder. Breeding is expensive. The best breeders are the ones who do it for passion and as a hobby.

I totally agree with sridarshan that people should be very selective on who they buy the dog from.

Nolin, you have no idea about dogs and dog breeds. A lab is supposed to be friendly and affectionate. I have seen backyard breeders just feeding their dogs they provide no exercise nor they spend time with their dogs which affects their temperament. People assume Pit bull as dangerous because of the attack record they have, now those pit bulls attack because they were breed wrong not taken care of like how a pit bull should be taken care of. Now why do people buy dogs to have a companion which is = friend or family member, every individual has a requirement so they choose a dog according to their temperament not just any dog. You will accept any stupid friend because he is already your friend but will you accept a terrorist or a serial killer as a friend just because he is human. this is the stupidest argument I have ever seen. This post but by Srichandan Dash is on public interest. But what you are saying is like supporting puppy millers and backyard breeders.

nolin try n understand buddy.. look a breeder spends his tym n money to bring up the puppies in the best possible way he can.food, deworming, vaccination s,check ups, etc. requires money.. it is absolutely correct on his part to ask for money.. i dont noe wats wrong in that.. u cant expect him to give those pups for free.. n its not easy to bring up 7-8 pups for 2-3 months, it takes a lot of money n effort

We have had dogs in our family before I was born. I would probably have seen 10-15 litters of breeds ranging from Great Danes to spitzes at my home itself. Now since all these years (apart from last two litters which we had in 2005) we never sold the puppies. They were gifted to friends and family. Maximum number of the gifted ones were ill-mantained when we visited their homes. Then I grew up, and when I had a litter of Great Danes, I sold them for 10-15k. I honestly say in this forum I also wanted the money as it was a substantial amount. Now, I got the biggest lesson, only 1 of the 18 puppies in 2 litters died within one year of birth. We chatted about Mercedes and Maruti earlier, and its true that a 50 lac Mercedes is most of the time well maintained and a 2 lac Maruti more often than not is casually treated. People who beg for free puppies would beg for free maintenance and here I am not the one who initiated comparing living beings to non-living.

Since 2005, I never had one litter, not because I never had bitches, I had two since then, its because I didn't own a good stud nor could find it near my locality. Now how many dog lovers disagree with me and would ask me to have proceeded with any stud just for the demand of my friends to own a puppy from my dogs?

Nolin,

Obviously we are all more inclined towards breeds than dogs, because we are getting what we want in breeds. For example I cant keep Rott/Dobermann/GSD in apartment without exercising them whereas I can keep PUG/Lhasa Apso in apartment without daily walks, most people selecting their own breed based on their lifestyle and they deserve it.

If you say that one should be interested in dogs than breeds, then in same case why do we specifically need cows milk for coffee/tea? we more inclined towards cows milk than any other animal milk just because cows milk more suited to our lifestyle. In similar way ppl choosing their own interested breeds depending upon their own life style and I too say that they are also dog lovers.

PS: No offense for anyone as I said what I felt.

Nice video... I saw in classifieds that the german shepherds are sold for Rs3000/- onwards, I personally feel that the only the buyers are encouraging such breeders by taking the german shepherd for low cheap price. But we also take this point into consideration that in india as a (middle-class) country, ppl has the mentality that they wont spend much more money for pets. Dont know where it ends....
